The only authentic 1880's underground gold mine tour in the Northwest! The Crystal Gold Mine, near Kellogg, Idaho was one of the first hard rock mines in the Silver Valley. Worked during the 1880’s; closed by hiding the mine, it was rediscovered in 1991, reclaimed in 1996, and opened as a tourist historical attraction. Crystal Gold Mine can be reached by taking Idaho Exit 54 on Interstate 90 to the Miner's Memorial (located on the North side of the freeway). Turn left (west) on Silver Valley Road, and go two miles.

If you’ve explored old mines on your own before this will be underwhelming, but it’s a good spot if you’re a tourist. Panning for gold is fun and there are tons of good-sized pieces in the tubs; no pickers though. The demonstration of how to pan is quick, and those who didn’t already know how to pan really couldn’t find anything.

The mine hardhats were fun. The tour has lighting so makes it easy to see your footing and also the displays. The guide explained the mining history and was knowledgeable about mining terminology!
