Kibera is the largest slum in Africa that houses about 10% of Nairobi's population with majority of the residents living in extreme poverty. Kibera is in southwest Nairobi, roughly 5 kilometres from the city centre. Kibera, Nubian for Forest or Jungle, was founded in the colobial era. When Nubian soldiers, who had served in the interests of British military, were allocated land. Africans with permits to live in Nairobi started renting out from the Nubian landlords therefore growing into an informal settlement. Unescorted visits are not advised, but several agencies run tours of this township.
