Arboretum in Nairobi was founded in the early 20th century in a bid to save indigenous trees from the demand of fuel by the Uganda Railway. These new trees that were being tried out for forestry were gazetted as a national reserve in 1932 hence becoming an arboretum "a living collection of trees". The Arboretum has over 300 species of trees that are home to hundreds of birds, insects and small mammals in 30 hectares of land.

Kibera is the largest slum in Africa that houses about 10% of Nairobi's population with majority of the residents living in extreme poverty. Kibera is in southwest Nairobi, roughly 5 kilometres from the city centre. Kibera, Nubian for Forest or Jungle, was founded in the colobial era. When Nubian soldiers, who had served in the interests of British military, were allocated land. Africans with permits to live in Nairobi started renting out from the Nubian landlords therefore growing into an informal settlement.
