The Westgarth Picture Theatre opened to the public in 1921. Incorporating Art Deco style with classical features, it's the oldest purpose built cinema in operation in Melbourne. The building was heritage listed in 1994 by the National Trust of Australia. Current owners Palace Cinemas purchased the building in 2006, two extra cinemas were added, and the building renovated, in keeping with its unique architectural heritage. Head to the Palace Westgarth for local and international new releases and art-house films, screened within its five cinemas. If the weather's fine, enjoy a flick in the theatre's courtyard, accompanied by a pair of headphones and premium beverage.

This is an historic iconic building - fabulous and shows great regular and arthouse movies - a must. 12 minute walk down the hill in High Street or catch a tram heading south to city - only 2-3 stops. Shop and look around Westgarth while you're there.

One of my two favourite cinemas. This gorgeous historical theatre shows many arthouse movies as well as some of the better mainstream ones. It's also located on Northcote's coolest street with plenty of restaurants and bars for before and after. They have children's sessions, especially during school holidays and they even have Mums and Bubs sessions where you can take your screaming little darling - I certainly did!
