Only a mile or so from Top of the Woods, this is an extraordinary & rare woodland treat! Built in the late 1820’s by Morgan Jones in honour of his uncle; who Morgan inherited the Cilwendeg Estate from. There are information boards which will let you discover the truly unique history of The Shell House and the Cilwendeg estate. It’s open on Thursdays but you can visit and look from the outside any day!

The Cilwendeg Shell House Hermitage is a most remarkable ornamental grotto, and a rare survival in West Wales. It was built in the late 1820s by Morgan Jones the Younger, who inherited the Cilwendeg estate upon the death of his uncle and created the Shell House in his uncle’s honour. NB. It is not open all year. It is open traditionally from April to September on Thursdays only. Admission is free but donations are warmly welcomed by the Temple Trust.
