Who doesn't know it, the picture of the eleven New York workers spending their lunch break at a dizzying height on a steel girder? Crossing the Wiwilí Bridge, I immediately feel reminded of it. Young Freiburgers have made themselves comfortable on the blue metal arches of the bridge. They chat, listen to music and enjoy the sunset dangling feet." Since the crossing between the Stühlinger district and the old town was closed to cars in 1980, the Wiwilíbrücke has become a popular meeting place and is one of the most important connections from Freiburg's west to the city center for pedestrians as well as cyclists. On average, almost 8,000 people a day cycle over the iron truss bridge built at the end of the 19th century. It is one of the last preserved bridges of its kind in Germany and particularly catches the eye with its elegantly curved arches and blue color. So if you want to experience the favorite place of many young Freiburgers for once, grab a bike, e.g. at the bike station, ride from the train station towards Jazzhaus and make a short stop on the bridge. Enjoy the view of the towers of the Sacred Heart Church and the Schönberg. The Christmas lights are also particularly pretty to look at, when thousands of little lights bathe the Wiwilí Bridge in warm light.
