It used to be an open cast mine, but now is a serious of 4 to 5 lakes, it takes around 2 hours to walk the perimeter, there are short cuts. The scenery is beautiful and the wildlife in abundance.

It's a beautiful nature reserve, now managed by the RSPB. If you go to the visitors' centre and use their facilities you have to pay a small charge but it is free to use the footpaths if you just want to walk around it. You can also see "Oddball" - the absolutely enormous open-cast mining machinery that is still on the site! The footpaths also connect to a walk over to Lemonroyd Marina, and to the Transpennine Trail and Leeds Country Way networks.
