Within St. George, the paintings by the famous Ethiopian artist Afework Tekele and other ecclesiastical wealth and cultural heritage of the past are displayed. Significant for Ethiopian orthodox Christians.

The Cathedral was founded by Emperor Menelik Il in commemoration of the. 1896 victory that the country made under his leadership over the invading Italian army. A relic of St George was carried to the historical Adwa battle field inspiring the emperor to build the Cathedral as a tribute to the Saint that ensured the victory of the war. The cathedral has a traditional Ethiopian design and octagonal shape and the outer walls of the building are covered in splendid artwork and mosaics, including paintings by Maitre Afewerk Tekle — the renowned and world-acclaimed Ethiopian Artist. A museum is found in the church which has some useful information and interesting displays. From the top of the Museums tower one can have spectacular view of the city.
