The Fortifications: These old tunnels and gun placements still exist in neglected-form between Te Rauone Beach and Pilots Beach off Harrington Point Rd. Drive up hill from Te Rauone Beach and park on the side of the road just before the power lines cross the road. Find the track that leads down to the rocks below. The track takes you past the Fortifications, and the kids will enjoy exploring the tunnels—good footwear essential. There is excellent family fishing off the rocks at the bottom—mainly butter fish & you're almost guaranteed to catch something. There are also rock pools. If you're lucky a seal may swim by or a ship may sail by. The shipping channel comes really close at this point.
