Loosely translated as "Washerwoman Alley," Il Vicolo dei Lavandai is a small corner of Alzaia Naviglio Grande famous for its old wash-house where ladies used to wash their clothes up until the 1950s. Today the area is more artsy, and offers several restaurants where you can try traditional dishes from Milanese or Lombard cuisine, like Milanese risotto with saffron, pumpkin and parmesan stuffed pasta or polenta. Tips : Check out the nearby courtyard where you'll find an art gallery that offers free entry to its exhibitions. Visit in the morning to avoid the crowds.

In the Vicolo dei Lavandai, it is possible to admire an incredible wash house dating back to the last century. A testimony of a time when there was no washing machine and, consequently, we were forced to resort to manual methods, which were, without a doubt, much more demanding. Another aspect that arouses curiosity is that, unlike what is usually thought, here, it was not women but men who took care of washing clothes. Lovely corner on the naviglio Grande canal, the place where historically women washes the linen. Ideal for couples at sunset. Very romantic
