The workplace and home of late Australian avant-garde artist Brett Whiteley, this space is preserved as it was when Whiteley died, and visiting is a great way to connect with the way art is made. It’s like visiting a working studio, with his tubes of paint, unfinished paintings, art equipment, and collections of reference books lying around. March through November, the studio holds poetry readings on the first Sunday of every month, as well as hourlong classical music recitals on the third Sunday of every month. They’re free, and you don’t need to book for either—you can just show up at the studio.

Roam around Brett Whitely's home and arts studio, see his bedroom with half finished works and quotes scrawled on the walls.
Whether you know who Brett Whiteley is or not, this studio of his that remains partly untouched is definitely worth a visit. Its located on Raper Street, one of the laneways off Devonshire street and is slightly hidden from the crowds circling the bourke street bakery (Surry Hills) and Crown Street shops, which makes it even more of a gem.
BW was an avant guard Australian Artist- Gallery that was his home and studio. It is usually open to the public Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, 10am-4pm, and to booked education groups on Wednesdays and Thursdays. It will be closed temporarily during the holiday period: last day open for 2016 is 18 December, reopening 6 January 2017
