Thirty miles from London, the town of Stevenage was once a popular pit stop for stagecoaches. In the modern era, it remains a modestly important transport hub, whisking commuters to London Kings Cross in under half an hour and connecting to Doncaster, Leeds, and York in the north. The original station of 1850 was north of the town, and its completion was a source of some controversy, sparking fears that the rail line would cripple the thriving stagecoach business – which, unsurprisingly, it eventually did. Stevenage entered a new phase of development after winning New Town status in the 1940s and gained a pedestrianized town center – one of Britain’s first – to which the station finally moved in 1973. As well as the shops, check out the nearby Fairlands Valley Park, with its large watersports lake, and Stevenage Arts & Leisure Centre, a complex of theatres and fitness facilities just across the road from the station. Trains calling at Stevenage include services from Great Northern, Thameslink, and LNER. From 25th October 2021, a brand-new train operator called Lumo will run between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh via the East Coast Main Line, calling at Stevenage, Newcastle, and Morpeth, although only a limited number of services will stop at Stevenage.
