You won’t regret a trip to this beautiful valley near Tywyn. The Castell is a ruin now but still provides magnificent views along the fertile valley in the foothills of Cadair. I recommend the drive via the coastal road to Tywyn, turn off at Abergnowlyn. Afterwards, if you feel like something more energetic, hike up Bird Rock (1 hour) and gets views down to the sea.

Castell Y Bere LL36 9TS It is our closest Castle. Now a ruin but still a very pretty place to visit. It is in Llanfihangel Y Pennant at the base of Cader Idris. It is free to visit and park. It is about 9 miles away and will take just over 20 minutes to drive. Dogs welcome. Built by Welsh ruler Llywelyn ap Iorwerth (Llywelyn the Great) to protect Gwynedd’s southern frontier, construction began in 1221 with the castle remaining in use until 1294. Whilst you are there just a mile or so further along the road you will find Mary Jones’ cottage (derelict). Mary Jones at the age of 15 walked 26 miles, barefoot, over the mountains to Bala to buy a copy of the Welsh bible. She is buried in Bryncrug Church

Out of the way and a little bit special, Castell Y Bere is a lovely castle ruins in what many would consider the middle of no where, don't tell everyone about it though, it's better if it stays between us.
