After more than 100 years, St Kilda is still Melbourne’s best playground by the sea. Whether you want to be next to, in, on or under the water, St Kilda is awash with fun things to do. Rollerblade or cycle along the foreshore, go kite boarding or stand up paddle boarding, fly a kite, charter a fishing boat, sky dive onto the beach, rustle up a game of beach volleyball or cricket, enjoy an ocean swim or lie on the beach and read a book. To get to St Kilda beach, take the #96 Tram route from the city.

Situated just 4km from the cbd, spread across 16 acres and hosting 11 historic buildings and gardens, the convent is Australia’s largest multi-arts precinct. Hosting multitudes of art projects, exhibitions, market stalls and festivals - you won’t be short on finding things to do here. On a quiet day, you can still drop in just to soak up the garden sun, grab yourself a brunch or coffee, or bring the kids along to the collingwood childrens farm for a chance to meet some new furry friends (most days they have guinea pig holding too!). 1 St Heliers St, Abbotsford VIC 3067 (03) 9415 3600 https://abbotsfordconvent.com.au

Just a short drive further than busy St Kilda Beach, Brighton offers quieter, whiter sands with much fewer people (and more locals). If you’d like to enjoy a cold beverage, coffee or a meal while watching the kids in a protected swimming space, go into brighton baths and set yourself down on the front deck, give the kids a towel and enjoy a bit of peace. 251 Esplanade, Brighton VIC 3186 (03) 9592 7350 https://brightonbathshealthclub.com.au/

It would not be hard to spend a whole day in this beautiful winery based in the Mornington Peninsula. The building that houses the restaurants and cellar door is a sight within itself, followed by the sculpture park that houses the owners private collection. A must do is a meal at their 3 chefs hat, fine diner, Laura for a degustation meal of refined small dishes or at their 1 chefs hat Bistro, Point Leo Restaurant. You will not regret either option.

Just an hour out of Melbourne on the Yarra Valley track is Healesville. There are so many wonderful Victorian Wineries to stop at including Oakridge, which also has an incredible restaurant at the winery. A must stop is the Mac Forbes cellar door, Graceburn Wine Room. They do a hands-on and tailored wine tasting experience with delicious cheeses and cured meats, or head down on a Sunday for their Sunday Lunch. Take the kids to meet the animals at Healesville Sanctuary and walk down the main strip in Healesville to experience local stores and larders down to the Four Pillars Gin distillery for another tasting. Then if nature takes your fancy, drive down to Warburton and enjoy the beautiful creek that runs through the town or drive further out to the Red Wood Forest for an outdoor walk. A day well spent.

Hot tip for a quieter sky-high sunset view of melbourne without having to deal with the crowds at eureka sky deck - Vue de Monde is situated in the heart of the city and stands at 55 levels high. The building, designed by architects Elenberg Fraser is breathtaking to look at, and once you ride to the top you can view almost 360 degrees of the city and surrounding landscapes. It hosts a michelin star restaurent run by celebrity shef, Shannon Bennet. Attached to the restaurant is a separate bar with sky high windows facing the south east. Buy yourself a beer or a cocktail and enjoy the tranquil (and much quieter) scenery at a fraction of the cost. Rialto Towers, 525 Collins St, Melbourne VIC 3000 (03) 9691 3888 Vuedemonde.com.au

After exhausting their seats in their first restaurant in St Kilda, Uncle added a new door for patrons in collins street, Melbourne CBD. A little bit of Paris in Melbourne – France Soir is a Melbourne institution, a buzzy bistro on Toorak Road. Expect all of the French classics with a side of French snootiness. The restaurant is BYO but the owners have one of the best wine lists in Melbourne of all of the French classics one would expect. A tiny bit off the beaten track in Brunswick East in relative newcomer, Etta Dining. The kitchen is headed by an ex-Embla chef and the menu is interesting, unpretentious, honest and delicious. This beautiful wine bar cum fine diner has serious credentials behind it. Run by industry veterans, Travis Howe and Andrew Joy with JP Twomey behind the kitchen – these guys have worked for restaurants from the likes of Cutler & Co, Tonka, Coda and Marion. Andrew even produces his own wine under the label, Little Rara. Incredible wine lists spanning from classic heavy hitters to more lo-fi natural wines there’s truly something for everyone. Food is designed to share with a focus on seasonal local produce. The whole fish with a delicious butter garlic sauce is a must have as well as the tripe and cuttlefish gratin. Dine downstairs at the buzzy wine bar or sit upstairs for a more formal experience. There are also 3 private function spaces including the basement wine cellar. Why I love it: Great service, fun interesting food without pretension, the rum baba and seriously good vibes that have seen me come for dinner and stay until last orders. https://thecarltonwineroom.com.au/

If you are a pasta lover, then Tipo 00 is a must go in Melbourne. This tiny restaurant takes only a small amount of bookings every night so be prepared to wait. Luckily there are a bevy of wine bars including their sister restaurant Osteria Illaria so a drink or two to while away the wait is never far. Start on their house made focaccia served with Ricotta, any of their pasta dishes will satiate the biggest of pasta lovers and always finish with their famous Tipomisu. Why I love it: Honest, delicious, simple, Italian food. I could wax lyrical about this restaurant for hours but all you need to know is one bite of their pasta and you’ll be hooked. https://www.tipo00.com.au/ https://www.osteriailaria.com/

A Melbourne intuition and stalwart, Ablas has been at home in Carlton since 1979 serving soulful, authentic, Lebanese food made from the heart. The vibe is non pretentious and the food is nourishing and delicious. Sample traditional Lebanese dishes such as Kibee Nayeh, a raw lamb dish with Burghul. Why I love it: Honest and authentic cooking with great quality produce.

Tamura Sake Bar might be a newbie on the block, but it’s already become a neighbourhood local for many Fitzroy locals. This Japanese Izakaya is owned by Fumi Tamura who owns other Melbourne late night venues such as Horse Bazaar. Perch at the bar and let the staff guide you through their sake list or sip on a Yuzu Margarita while Jazz vinyl curated by the owner plays in the background and feast on a bevy of Japanese bar snacks. Why I love it: A really great date spot. I love the low-key vibes and sake list is always interesting. It’s a great place to get the night started. https://www.tamurasakebar.com/

A favourite amongst city workers, Kirks Wine bar is nestled on the corner of Little Bourke St and Hardware Lane with a Parisian Bistro charm. It’s the perfect spot to people watch outside with a glass of wine and a snack of oysters and polenta chips. It’s open from 7.30am so head down for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Follow the night by following the stairs next to Kirks Wine Bar up to their French Sister restaurant – French Saloon for a decadent French meal in a gorgeous dining space looking out onto Hardware Lane. Why I love it: One of those places that is just really comfortable and easy to settle in. It’s solid and consistent – a place to stay the night or have a quick drink before perusing the several dining options nearby. http://www.kirkswinebar.com/home/

You can’t get more Melbourne than this bar. A great small bar designed and built by Architect and Co-Owner, Georgina O’Connor this bar is dangerous, dark, moody and fun. Great cocktails on the list with rotating DJ’s every night downstairs, if you fancy a boogie there is also a small dance room with a function-1 Soundsystem upstairs. To sweeten the deal even further, Butchers Diner next door even delivers food. Why I love it: It’s a great place to make friends with a new stranger or two but most importantly they make my favourite Margarita. https://www.angelmelbourne.com/

American Italian food in a beautiful, intimate dining space in what used to be a dive bar. Can’t get more Melbourne than that. But the food is truly great – delicious pizzas with a range of extra toppings from anchovies to capocollo, a stunning Italian heavy wine list (as expected from the owners of Bar Liberty) and a rich heart stopping Rigatoni alla Vodka. The newest baby from the owners of Bar Liberty and Capitano, this bakery is taking off and with good reason. A buzzy bakery that is a must go-to if you’re in the area. Pick up a loaf of bread to take back to your Luxico Home to have for breakfast, but you would be daft to not settle in with one of their flaky, buttery pies choose from a cheeseburger, chicken and corn or mushroom fillings, and finish with a decadent peanut butter miso cookie. For some of the most authentic Sichuan food you can get in Australia, Dainty Sichan is a must go if you can take the heat. Known for their Sichuan style Hot Pot (don’t worry – non spicy broths are also amazing and delicious) their al la carte options are just as good. Our picks are their cold dishes and their chong-qing chicken. Why I love it: Very authentic Sichuan food is pretty hard to come by. https://daintysichuanfood.com.au/

A restaurant in a car park? Yes, a Thai restaurant in a carpark at that. Melbourne’s worst kept secret, Soi 38 throws out traditional Thai boat noodles during the day and spicy Northern Thai dishes at night. Try their steamboat barbeques which they are known for – the fat from the barbequed meats drip into the steamy hot pot. A very fun and authentic experience for those who can take the heat. Why I love it: It doesn’t get more traditional than this. Great flavours, great price, fun atmosphere. https://www.soi38.com.au/

Possibly one of Melbourne’s most well-known and beloved dumpling restaurants, Shandong Mama is a must go. Their dumpling menu is vast with an interesting selection of fillings that go far beyond the usual pork and chive or pork and cabbage options. There is a huge focus on seafood-based dumplings and vegan options as well. They are now also BYO so a great place to have dinner at with options for everyone. Why I love it: Thin perfect wrappers that encase a morsel of delicious protein. What’s not to love?

After opening their doors as a pop up on Lygon street in 2014, Pidapipo has fast become a Melbourne gelati favourite and is now permanently on Lygon street (carlton) and has expanded its doors to the city and South Yarra for its many fans. Today still, you’ll easily find their address by looking for a line out the door! Each location is designed by interior architect Rabindra Naidoo, and is inspired by Italian design of the ’50s and ’60s, rich with steel, brass, marble, stone, terrazzo, tiles and leather. A trip to Melbourne wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Fitzroys Finest cocktail establishment, The Everleigh. An intimate cocktail bar that harks back to a more refined era. This bar has won a bevy of awards and for good reason. An incredible list of cocktails and all delicious. Wash down your cocktails with some fried chicken downstairs at Belles Hot Chicken and do it all over again. Why I love it: There’s a good reason why this bar has so many accolades. Try a cocktail and you’ll see why immediately. https://madeintheshadegroup.com.au/the-everleigh-2/

Fairy penguins at St Kilda beach

Many locals don’t realise that a trip to Phillip Island is not necessary to see native Fairy Penguins, or Little Penguins as they are also known, in the wild. For a fun, free up-close encounter with these cute little swimming birds, you simply need to find your way to the end of St Kilda pier at dusk to catch watch them come into roost under the pier. Native only to a small part of the Victorian coastline, these penguins come within metres of the path along the end of the pier allowing visitors to get closer than you would at the zoo.

Public Art

Whilst wandering through the city laneways, you are likely to spot some of Melbourne’s famous street art, the most famous of which can be found in Hosier Lane. Street Art is welcomed in many of Melbourne’s back alleys and laneways, some of which is actually protected by the local council to prevent it being painted over. Many local artists have made a name for themselves using the laneway walls as their canvas and such is the quality of the artwork, that the street artists’ unwritten code of honour protects the artwork from being defaced or replaced by other artwork.
