Parks & Nature

You seriously can’t get a better view of the Bay than from this area. The stairs kick your butt, but every time you make it up to the top and turn around and see the Bay and Palace of the Fine Arts and some of the Presidio, it’s a great reward and pumps you up to go for another round. Do one set of stairs and then at the top do three sets of 15 push-ups. Then walk back down the stairs. Sprint back up. Do some air squats. Do planks. I’d say about four or five rounds of stairs with three sets of 10 to 15 exercises in between. It should take about an hour.

I love coming here to run, because it’s more of a terrain and trail run, but you are able to soak in nature and sea breeze while catching amazing views of the Bay. It’s about three miles out and back, and starts at the Sutro Baths, which is an iconic San Francisco relic. The mornings are always the best just because it doesn’t get too hot. As the day goes on the heat kind of picks up over here. Though if you do the run later in the day, you can head back and sit by the Sutro Baths and watch the sunset.

There are two trails I like to run on from Arguello Gate: the Upper Ecology Lovers’ Trail to the Presidio Promenade and back, which is three miles and pretty moderate. The Lower Ecology Lovers’ Trail to the Batteries to the Bluffs Trail and to the Bay Area Ridge Trail covers the majority of the Presidio and is roughly 6.5 miles. It is a bit more advanced. Along the Mountain Lake Park Trail, which is to the left of the Arguello Gate, there are parcourse stations that include a chin-up bar and a balance beam. Each section comes with instructions on the workout; there are 15 stations total along the Mountain Lake Park Trail.

This is the place to come for a perfect running and fitness combo: The surface is flat for running, and there is an outdoor training facility called the Fitness Court where you can join other fitness fanatics doing burpees, lunges, squats, and pull-ups, and other fun moves. On the weekends, you’ll see trainers with their clients here. Every now and then, you can do a drop-in on a bootcamp class with trainers who will allow you to walk up and join their training sessions. They’ll have a “join us” sign, and you just walk up and sign a waiver and they put you in the class. It’s usually around $10 for a drop-in.

Everything Else

When I want to do a long run, this is where I’ll come. Typically I’ll go from the Ferry Building south to AT&T Park, back to the Ferry Building, and then to Fisherman’s Wharf, and back to the Ferry Building. It’s a flat surface and a great run to clear your head and people watch. The total distance is about 6.5 miles. There are few green patches along the way that are perfect for doing some circuit training like air squats, push-ups, step-ups, dips, and other fun things. I wouldn't recommend it on the weekends, though, because the Farmers’ Market at the Ferry Building Plaza gets pretty crowded and can slow you down.

Sightseeing

This monument to SF firefighters also happens to be the summit of a glute-burning 400 steps. If you want to do something active and just kind of move your body, there’s a narrow staircase that starts at the base of the Levi Strauss headquarters and winds up to Coit Tower. I wouldn’t recommend trying to sprint these stairs. Once at the top, there is a grassy knoll that is perfect for doing some plank and core work. Bring some pocket change, and take the elevator all the way up to the top of Coit Tower. There’s a snack shop where you can get a Gatorade to gulp down, and the views are pretty amazing.
