Great, reasonably priced delicious regional Italian food, delicious pizzas, and a boffo wine list. It's so nice to have an Italian place that doesn't rely on tomato sauce. Go early, late or wait! The host/ess will take your phone number and you can retire to a nearby cocktail lounge for a pre-dinner drink.

Zuni is still one of the best restaurants in the city. It's the place where chefs eat because the food is always delicious, simple, and well prepared. California/Italian cuisine with the best ingredients has been Zuni's trademark for over 30 years. Everything they fix is delicious, but they are known for their wood-fired oven roasted chicken, oysters, caesar salad, late-night Zuni-burgers, a wine list featuring Zuni-exclusive selections, perfect cocktails, great service, and beautiful, informal surroundings.

Nice Korean soups, stews and rice served in hot stone bowls. They also have many more familiar Korean items like bibimbap and bulgogi. I love all the little bowl of different kim-chi that come with the entree.

So many people in our neighborhood wished for a Chinese restaurant, so we were happy when Wonderland put down stakes. It's also very good Chinese food, for a restaurant in the neighborhood. I've been numerous times. The staff is very nice and friendly, the have Acme Beer on tap, and usually have my favorite sauteed snow pea sprouts. I also like most of their noodle dishes, and the duck. I love duck! Like all Chinese restaurants, the more people you take, the more fun you'll have, and the more dishes you'll get to try.

Just around the corner is one of the best small-plates, communal tables places in the City. It's always crowded, and I guarantee you'll meet new friends at the big tables. I like the food. The ingredients are always the best. Even the french fries are perfect. Don't forget to have a craft cocktail. The bartender here is a master and the drinks are legendary.

The Mill is legendary for their $5.00 slice of toast! Yes, it's a little over-the-top, but the bread is dense, thick, and house made (you can pick up a loaf on your way out) the house coffee is Four Barrell (*****). The interior is peaceful, minimalist modern. There are tables outside in the front as well. It's a great place to hang out.

It's our neighborhood go-to for morning coffee and very good pastries, salads, and magical French Toast. The coffee is from Equator Roasting, and you can buy a pound on your way our. It's good! They sell many well-crafted pastries, baguettes, and did I mention the French Toast? The texture is more like a souffle, and it's served in a pool of raspberry coulis. Swoon!

It's great German food! I love the smoked meats, sausages, and delicious sauces and starches here. You'll share a table, unless you're a party of 6 or more. There will most likely be a wait, and the room is LOUD! Fantastic selection of imported beers. You can even get a boot!

They only have 4 flavors of ice cream at a time (pray for salted caramel!) and ingredients are all local and organic. They make each order to order in mad-scientist smoking mixers by dripping a few drops of liquid nitrogen into the mix. My first thought: Gimmicky. My second thought: This is f*cking amazing ice cream! A scoop is around $4., and not big, but this is like eating delicious frozen butter. The texture is dense and silken, the flavors are subtle and not overly sweet. I'm Smitten.

I'm always wary of more "upscale" Mexican restaurants. Will they be as satisfying as our neighborhood taqueria? For Nopalito, the answer is a resounding yes. The Mexican cuisine is made using natural ingredients, and the dishes aren't what you might find at evey other restaurant. Dishes are abundant and reasonably price, and everything is delicious. Be sure and try the Carnitas, which is in a class by itself.

I always tell guests that they should splurge on one great meal (at least) in the City, which has maybe the best restaurants in the US. One of my favorites is Commonwealth. Beautiful but unfussy dishes of eclectic, intense flavors. Small and larger plates. Creative flavor combinations. Everything is natural and house-made. The cuisine is hard to describe, but I guess they call it "New American," which doesn't do it justice. Combine the food with a fantastic wine list and you'll have an unforgettable meal. The ambiance is modern and casual, so wear your jeans if you like. I love to sit at the counter and watch the cooks at work. The counter is also great if you happen to be dining alone. The staff is friendly and welcoming. You can't go wrong, and this is not a really big spluge, just a medium-sized one. My favorite foodie friend thinks it's a real bargain, with food quality that exceeds those really big ticket joints. Check it out and bon apatite!

Our good traditional taqueria is as good as the ones in the Mission district, with tasty burritos, tacos, quesadillas, freshly made carrot and orange juices, a variety of salsas and garish yellow walls. You can amp up a regular burrito by requesting fresh avocado or guacamole, and salsa picante, cilantro and onions. My fall back is the carnitas, but everything is good, and they have a couple vegetarian options. Cheap and delicious.

Because the seafood is good, and it's been operating in the city since the 1850s, it's worth a visit. Everything on the menu is simple, familiar, and approachable, but their seafood continues to shine. The atmosphere is definitely old San Francisco, as much as it is possible to be. You'll have to brave the crowds and visitors to snag a table, but it's worth the wait. You'll feel like you're in a time warp, with great food. The over-priced, mediocre Fisherman's Wharf restaurants should all be this good, but they're not.

Forget about trying to pick out a good restaurant among the throngs of crazy Chinatown joints. Head out to the Richmond district for really delicious Cantonese food. HKL is my current favorite. Great for dinner, great for Dim Sum brunch. Take a crowd if you can and you'll be able to try more dishes for less dough. Enjoy the splendiforous decor and the tanks full of fish and crustaceans. Islamic Chinese isn't a cuisine you come by every day. Old Mandarin is a tiny restaurant with big flavors, and giant bubbling hot pots. What is Islamic Chinese? It's sort of similar to other Chinese restaurants, but they just say no to pork, and they say yes yes yes to delicious lamb dishes of all sorts. Take friends and grab a big table (there are only about 8 tables, but there's rarely a long wait) and order a bit of everything you've never had before. Oh, man, this is good!

Do you want to experience a briny umami washing over your senses even if you're not dining on a wharf? This is the neighborhood "secret Sushi bar," but with Yelp and social media buzz, not posting a sign outside makes little difference. Ujji, like most of the other high-end sushi joints now requires that all guests opt for an Omakase menu, so bring a big apatite and a credit card with $300-500 wiggle room. And there are only 16 chairs, so make a reservation!

Sushi is almost always good. You'll always find satisfaction in a familiar toro nigiri or a wild dragon roll. Then there's the other kind of sushi: the chef hands you something completely new and it's a revelation on your tongue and when you catch your breath, you ask the chef "wow. what was that?" Those revelatory places can easily empty many hundred dollar bills from your wallet and are an amazing special occasion treat. Sushi Raw is more about familiar flavors satisfaction. They have a giant selection of standard and wildly imaginative rolls, udon, donburi, bentos, and ramen in giant bowls that's tastier than the precious hipster ramen joint around the corner.

It's a pleasure to visit Heath Ceramics. They make extraordinarily beautiful tile, dinnerware, vases and accessories. It's not cheap, but it's still all handmade in their Sausalito workshop, just as it has been since the 1950s. I've seen so many great shows here. It's a short walk from the house, so no parking hassles or drunken bus rides home! It's a gay sportsbar, but you might not realize this untill the scantily-clad go go boys start gyrating on the end of the bar. All the games are on an overwhelming bank of flat-screens and the way the crowd goes nuts when the Giants score is absolutely heterosexual! Excellent tap menu, good cocktails, friendly barpersons, and a (very good) burger joint in the rear. It's probably the funnest (word or not?) bar in the neighborhood.

It's cool, it's hip, and it's jammed. It was originally an artsy-designed quiet gay boite, but now it's full of just about everyone and their mothers. The place still looks good, the cocktails are fine, there's a good list of brews, and, because you can't turn around without rubbing up against someone you didn't come with (yet), you're bound to make new friends who may be open to suggestions. Who needs labels in the 21st century?

The place still looks good, the cocktails are fine, there's a good list of brews, and, because you can't turn around without rubbing up against someone you didn't come with (yet), you're bound to make new friends who may be open to suggestions. Who needs labels in the 21st century?
If you have a hankering to see soccer tournaments in real time on the big screen, this is the place! It can be fun, full, and crazy or casually uncrowded during the day, depending on the game schedule. Food is very good iteration of classic Brit Pub food. Bangers and mash, anyone?

This iconic view is 3 blocks away! It's one you've probably seen in photos, but it's still exhilarating to sit in Alamo Square park and see the many layers of the City unfold before you. Local's advice: Go west! Most of the tourist hordes don't cross the square to gaze over the western part of the city, all the way to the sea, but it's there and lovely. The view north is wonderful as well, and the amazing Westerfield house is across the street at Fulton and Scott. All you need to do is open your eyes and take it all in.

Chinatown is so much more than Grant Avenue, San Francisco, California, USA. There is a warren of 30+ alleys that will let you catch a glimpse of real life in this fascinating part of town on a more intimate scale. https://sf.curbed.com/2017/7/26/16034664/chinatown-alleys-san-francisco-tour And for real Chinatown commerce, walk down Stockton Street as well as Grant. Stockton doesn't have any frivolous souviner shops and overly precious tea emporiums. It has busy-to-the-point-of-chaos shops with ducks in the windows and produce you've never seen, good basic restaurants and dim sum joints, and everything else you need to cook a proper new years banquet.

You've heard about it, now go see it. It's a charming neighborhood with some nice cafes, wine bars (blush) and a few very good restaurants (Francis, Anchor, Besos) and a few more dildo shops than you probably have in your neighborhood. Bars...did I mention bars? All kinds of bars. And an iconic movie theatre, and Cliffs Variety, a hardware/housewares/toy/crafts store that also has some fun souvineers. The neighborhood is not as "gay"as it once was, despite the rainbow crosswalks and flags, but look to the sidewalk plaques for some good historic tidbits.

Parks & Nature

Golden Gate Park is a little or a lot of everything. It stretches from Stanyan Street (just walk west on Page or Haight Streets, they both dead-end into the park), all the way to the Pacific. What's there? A lot of everything. Go enjoy nature/museums/tennis courts/botanical gardens/golf/soccer/jogging/a bike ride/windmills/a model boat show/a historic carousel/a roller disco/swing dancing/an outdoor concert/etc.

This place is a "wow!!" You'll be in a historic lighthous in the southwest corner of Marin County. You can get there only by going through a cave and across a pedestrian drawbridge. If the waves are big enough, you might catch a splash. The views are breathtaking, to say the least. You'll learn something. The schedule is sporadic. Check it out on the GGNRA website.

Renzo Piano's remodel breathed life into the old Academy of Sciences. It's a great place to take kids or just yourself. There's an albino alligator named Claude. What else do you need to know? OH, yeah- Every Thursday evening is a themed "club night" with special exhibits, DJs or sometime live music, bars, and everything is open. Less than half the normal price of admission, 21+. No kids to step on.

This beautifully maintained and furnished Victorian mansion was built and occupied for generations by members of the Levi-Strauss family, but there's nothing denim about it. Much inside (and out) is original, and so beautiful. You'll learn so much about Victorians and how people (rich people in this case) lived at the turn of the last century. It's now the HQ of SF Heritage, our local architectural preservation non-profit, and they have tours on Wednesdays and Sundays and occassional special events. Check for details on-line.
