Flamingo Gardens is a really, really lovely tropical wildlife sanctuary with 60 acres. There is a tram, but my husband and I walked around instead. THIS IS NOT A ZOO!! This is a wildlife sanctuary where injured birds, birds of prey, otters, panthers, turtles, a black bear, alligators, snakes, stray cats, etc. are taken care of when they cannot survive in the wild. It started off caring for injured birds, but over the years they have expanded to care for ANY injured or donated reptiles, amphibians, and critters. Off-spring are then released back into the wild. Peacocks and ibises roam around the grounds freely. There is a pond/roosting area where numerous species of birds come and go as they please. The various injured birds of prey, black bear, otters are in enclosures, but that's because they are blind or have been injured AND cannot survive in the wild. There is a snack bar and a food truck with places to sit and eat, including if you bring your own lunch. There is also a well-stocked gift shop. AND, everything in the wildlife sanctuary is staffed by volunteers. Two groups of school children were there when we were and the children also seemed to really enjoy the Flamingo Gardens. Flamingo Gardens is such a great place !!!
