It was built by the Genoese in the eighteenth century, along the coast of the city, within an area now used as gardens. The aim of this construction was not so much that of creating a defensive bulwark of the territory but of controlling, and if necessary opposing, the development of the Matuzian city. Until recently it was used as a judicial prison; now it is the seat of conferences and exhibitions. Initially called Forte di San Giorgio, like the Ariston Theater and the Casino, it is one of the main attractions of the city of western Liguria.

Il forte di Santa Tecla situato accanto al porto vecchio di Sanremo . Inizialmente fu costruito dalla repubblica di Genova a seguito di una rivolta popolare sanremese, non a caso infatti i cannoni erano rivolti verso la città e non verso il mare a scopo difensivo. Successivamente fu adibito a carcere fino al 1997. Successivamente venne restaurato e adesso viene utilizzato per diverse mostre o eventi culturali .
