The Jerónimos Monastery 1502-1572 is the crown of the Manueline Style, and an impressive memorial to the Portuguese naval feats. Chosen as the royal pantheon and financed by the fabulous wealth from India, this monumental construction is a brilliant synthesis of European late-Gothic and early renaissance trends. This is also of unquestionable technical mastery, especially the elegant and bold ribbed dome that covers the entire church. UNESCO classified in 1983 it as a ‘World Heritage Site’. It is approximately 1,1 km from Casa do Restelo.

Just a glance at the ornate spires and grand carvings of the great Monastery of Jerónimos should be enough to deduce the raison d’être for this massive landmark which is nestled close to the banks of the Tagus River. It was built to mark Portugal’s most glorious age which was called ‘The Age of Exploration’. The fusion of architectural designs, known as the Manueline style, stands as testimony to the cultures encountered by Lisbon’s explorers, while the money used to build the structure came from Portugal’s international trade in cloves, cumin, and exotic spices. It is also another of the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The Mosteiro dos Jeronimos is the magnificent monastery, which was funded by the 16th century spice trade. Originally, the plans for the monastery were modest, but with an almost unlimited budget and 50 years of construction, the final result is the most extravagant religious building in Portugal. Within the dual-level cloisters intricate stone carvings adorn every surface, while the western portal exemplifies the whimsical Manueline design styles and sculpture. Insider tip: There can be very long queues to enter the monastery, but the adjoining church is as decorative, and is without the queues or entrance fee. Tourist information: Cloister €10 – Church Free
