The Chapel of São Sebastião (St. Sebastian) dates back to the 15th/16th centuries & is located in the northern part of the town next to the beaches of Algodio and São Sebastião. The monument’s current architecture exhibits different elements from different periods, the altar dates 1567, the tiles from the 17th-century cover the chapel’s interior. For several years, at the end of January, Festivities in honour of S. Sebastião and S. Vicente are held around the chapel being at times the largest celebration in the town and surrounding areas. Today, the festivities are known as the Feast of the Drunks and hundreds of people get together on the chapel street dancing, eating and drinking.

Sightseeing

Situated in a valley where a creek flows into the sea, its geographical configuration is that of a natural amphitheatre, ideal for organising events. It is not for nothing that the first national and international championships held in Portugal were conducted here. Ribeira d’Ilhas is a long point break right-hander (the waves follow the coastal contour) that receives all kinds of swells and works in all tides and is the region’s most consistent wave. With W/NO swells, Ribeira d’Ilhas can provide right-handers of up to 200 metres in length. It is a very valuable and competitive wave, as it allows for different levels of approach by surfers.
