The Philpott Lake is a popular destination for local people to reconnect with nature by boating, swimming, fishing or hiking. The lake has a marina, picnic and camping areas, and several boat launches. The visitor center provides more information about the Corps of Engineers operation, and displays photos and specimens of local plants and animals. The dam overlook near the small visitor center provides a spectacular view of the lake's coves and undeveloped shoreline and provides good photo opportunities. Sit, relax and enjoy the peace and quiet of the view, for you won't be likely to have a good cell phone signal. You can ride to the bottom of the dam for a look at the height of the dam. Here, it is cooler than the top due to the release of cold water to the Smith River. The Smith River is an excellent trout stream. There is a path between the visitor center and near the bottom of the dam, and other walking trails.

Home of the legendary fairy stones, this park is well known for its 168-acre lake adjoining Philpott Reservoir. The park is just minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Attractions include cabins, a campground, group camping, an equestrian campground, a conference center, hiking trails, lake swimming, rowboats, canoes, paddle boats, kayaks, picnicking and two playgrounds, including one in the water. This 4741 acre state park is named for the nearby natural minerals that often overlap to form cross-like crystals that are called fairy stones. These can freely be collected at a gas station on the right hand side of the road right before you reach the park entrance. Once you arrive, you might be able to push through a text from a cell phone, but your phone is unlikely to pick up a signal worth using. The lake is the heart of the park, and features a beach monitored by a lifeguard, a large shower house, a gift shop/concession stand, and nearby picnic shelters.

The menu of this recently opened restaurant combines vintage and contemporary American cuisine. Full service dining with family friendly menu and an excellent domestic craft brew selection. Lunch and dinner specials almost daily. Recurring shows on Friday nights feature live music and local talent. Upscale yet cozy, the high ceilings and second floor loft provide a spacious backdrop for elegant dining and sipping wine. Healthy choices as well as delightful homemade desserts, drinks and nightlife. If you have great service and enjoy your food, please leave them a great review. They have had problems with poor service in the past. Even so, this is where I wanted to have my birthday dinner in April of 2019. All eight of us loved it, and our waitress was wonderful.

We dine here at least once a week. Our favorite entree is the hot spicy Indian Curry Chicken. They have senior citizen specials on Wednesdays until 8 pm; a variety of meal choices for only $4.99 each! A great time to try their fried catfish...yum! Hugo's offers quality casual dining and a full service sports bar in a nice, warm atmosphere. Feels like family! Great food selections like steak, seafood, pasta, wraps, wings, burgers, salads and more. Hugotizer appetizers. Entree choices like spaghetti, smothered chicken, fried catfish, grilled wild salmon and more. Private dining room is available for parties, meetings or special gatherings. Carry-out available.

My favorite place to eat breakfast! Opens at 9 am. Pasture raised eggs (from owner's farm), omlettes, breakfast pizza (try it!), all you can eat pancakes, fried apples are all scrumptious. Breakfast and lunch are served until 3 pm. Dinner offered on Thursdays until 8 pm. Fresh ingredients, food made to order, delicious Greek food. Best baklava!! Might be hard to find, but it's worth the hunt. Look for the Jefferson Plaza building on the corner of Church and Bridge Street, across from the post office. Go to the back of the building - parking lot access is on Jefferson Street - and look up. It's on the second level above Hugo's. Check out some of the comments in their reviews on their Yelp review. 5 stars!!

This family run business has been frying up chicken for years! Many churches buy their chicken tender trays here, and the locals love to dip them in honey. Walsh's also serves salads, sandwiches, fried seafood, burgers, hotdogs, and homemade desserts. They have rave reviews about 'their best tasting chicken' as well as their corn fritters, fluffy biscuits, apple fritters, and coconut cake. And if you enjoy gizzards or chicken livers, they know how to make 'em right. Only open weekdays for lunch.
