The papal basilica, whose present design dates from the 11th and 13th centuries, was seriously damaged during the Battle of the Bulge, and it was rebuilt in Romanesque Revival style. The crypt dates from the Merovingian period and has magnificent frescoes. It houses a sumptuous white marble sarcophagus, containing the mortal remains of Saint Willibrord. Other sights are the St. Willibrord fountain and the Renaissance confessionals. Its surroundings are used for the Echternach International Festival.
Saint Willibrord Basilica Echternach

The abbey museum is situated in the vaulted cellars of the former abbey and is mainly dedicated to the Echternach scriptorium. The most beautiful facsimile pages of the famous magnificent specimens such as the Codex Aureus Epternacensis or the Codex Aureus Escorialensis can be admired in the museum of the abbey.

The old castle, protected by a moat, was built in four periods. The oldest part of the castle dates from the early 11th century. It was a small square-shaped fortress on a massive rock, surrounded by a wide ditch and a second wall facing the valley.

The Renaissance castle of Beaufort dates from 1649 and luckily never suffered severe damage apart from some minor transformations during the centuries. It was built by a famous man from Luxembourg, Jean Baron de Beck.

The castle is accessed via a large bailey protected by a mound. The main castle, built in dressed stone is encircled by a rampart which today is largely destroyed. A deep ditch, partly of natural origin, divides the castle in two halves. On the extreme tip of the promontory, the remnants of several stately mansions bear witness of the sumptuous architectural quality of this castle.
