We love barbecue if it's good barbecue. Hickory Stump is great barbecue. Open Wednesday thru Saturday and 11 - 7:30 on those days. The first Saturday of the month they do beef brisket. The sauces are excellent, but the pork is superb without any sauce.

It's about a 20 minute drive to Franklin NC. There you will find an exquisite French restaurant, Caffe Rel. In of all places, a gas station. Don't let this deter you. The food is gourmet and excellent. We've tried most everything on their menu and not a bad meal yet. A very special place for special occasions. The desserts are wonderful too.

There are 11 miles of trails within the park. Our favorite is Hi Falls Trail. It provides a nice but challenging walk into an great example of a moist, north-slope Appalachian cove. The trail features mature hardwoods, lichen-covered rocks, a variety of ferns and wildflowers, and a dense thicket of rhododendron. At the trail’s end is an observation platform. It overlooks noisy Hi Falls, a small cascade very typical of those found at the higher elevations throughout the Blue Ridge Mountains. The park is a great place for everything from picnics to family reunions.

Park visitors can tour an adjacent trout rearing station, hike on several nearby trails in the Blue Ridge Mountains or simply relax in this peaceful setting.
In our opinion Minnehaha Falls is the prettiest waterfall in Rabun County. The 60-foot high falls widens as it quickly cascades in 3-5 foot increments to a wide pool at its base. Minnehaha Falls is buried in a wide, steep-sided cove packed with rhododendron. This is a beautiful hike anytime, but an exceptionally beautiful one in mid-to-late May, when the rhododendron bloom.

Minnehaha Falls is buried in a wide, steep-sided cove packed with rhododendron. This is a beautiful hike anytime, but an exceptionally beautiful one in mid-to-late May, when the rhododendron bloom.

There are many native plants; jack in the pulpit, trillium, galax, yellow and purple violets, little brown jug, doll's eye, jewel weed, trout lily, blood root...so many beautiful plants that are not found so easily elsewhere. The forest seems quite old and the paths are usually cleared and accessible if the winter debris is cleared away. The two picnic sheds are nice and the trails lead to all kinds of interesting places to sit and contemplate.

Along with painting, he is also an avid and award winning carver. He enjoys carving all species of waterfowl, shore birds and song birds. We have one of Broderick's prints in our Master bedroom.

The result is a museum, a hands-on classroom, a venue for events, a repository for artifacts, and a remarkable 106-acre physical glimpse of a rich and engaging past. Visitors from around the world drive to the little town of Mountain City, Georgia to immerse themselves in the culture of Appalachia. One of our favorite places. Open 8:30am–4:30pm Monday-Saturday (closed Sundays).

A short, scenic drive to Brasstown. NC and you'll find the John C Campbell Folk School. You can register for classes in every folk craft imaginable. It's also a great place just to visit. They have a store that sells student and resident artists crafts. All of the classes are open, so you can drop in to observe. I (Terry) love the bluegrass music classes. Anchorage Boat Dock was built by Ned and Ruth Stockton in 1959. Materials including timbers and rock were gathered at the site and the construction was done by Ned and members of the family. The Poole family purchased it from them in 1967 and it has remained a family owned and operated business ever since. Boats are available for rent. The sandwiches in the sandwich shop are tasty, and the beer is cold. The ultimate day trip from our house...a day on Lake Burton.
