The discovery of what is now known as Céide Fields really began back in the 1930s when a local schoolteacher, Patrick Caulfield from Belderrig, often noticed piles of stones in the bottom of the blanket bog when cutting his turf. To everybody else, these were meaningless but he realised two very important points - firstly, the way the stones were piled up couldn't be natural so somebody had to put them there, and secondly, because they were down underneath the peat they had to be put there prior to the growth of the bog and so must be very ancient. The visitor centre at the Céide Fields not only presents the archaeology of the site but also the botany, bogs and geology of the area. It is located beside spectacular 370ft high cliffs. The place where Saint Patrick is to have spent 40 days on the mountain praying. There is an annual pilgrimage there the last Sunday in July when over 30,000 people will climb the 'reek' as it is locally called. The other 364 days of the year, it can be climbed with lots less people to enjoy stunning views of the 365 islands in Clew Bay.

Great loop walk. Guided walks available through Erris Beo. See the rocks laid out to advise the WWII pilots that they had reached land in Ireland. Fabulous views of cliffs and if you're lucky you might see a few dolphins in the bay also :)

Ionad Deirbhile is a visitor centre in Eachléim that gives a valuable insight into the lifestyle of the Erris region in times past. The centre houses a number of interesting historical artefacts and curiosities, and a wealth of information relating to local folklore, stories, myths, archaeology and local history. This information is presented in both Irish and English. A unique feature of the building, which immediately catches the eye, is a 10ft high stained-glass window, which illustrates the story of St. Deirbhile, after whom the centre is named. This is a replica of a window found in the Pre-Norman church at Fál Mór. Amongst the exhibitions at Ionad Deirbhile, you will find a large collection of information in relation to the assisted emigration scheme by James Hack Tuke. In 1883 and 1884, 11 ships embarked on 15 voyages from Blacksod Bay, bringing over 3,300 Irish emigrants to a new life in the USA and in Canada. The staff at Ionad Deirbhile have created an online database to allow people to search for their ancestors’ names in the passenger lists. A visit to Ionad Deirbhile is inspiring and informative – not to be missed! Open Monday to Friday, from 10am to 4.30pm. CONTACT  + 353 (0) 97 85727  eolas@ionaddeirbhile.ie  www.ionaddeirbhile.ie
