What to experience in Marion Bay

There are several places to visit in Marion Bay . At the end of Peregrine Drive you can turn right to several beautiful beaches located on the left hand side of the road . Look out for ‘gyms’ , formby bay’ and ‘white hut’ roads to get to them .
Within the Marion Bay township itself there are several things to do close by. As you walk or drive past the General Store you can grab a coffee , snack and even do your laundry there. The Marion Bay Jetty is excellent all year round for squidding and try Penguin Point (the beach it runs off) for when the mullet are running. Penguin Point is also a great place for swimming and you can walk from there over the cliff to the beautiful Williama's beach which has the Williama wreck which is a close wreck to swim out to snorkel if you don't have a boat handy. This is also a great area to stand up paddle or kayak. On your way back you could stop at the Tavern for lunch or dinner. ... Or a cold beer or two. Fishing charters run from the Marion Bay Jetty or the Pondalowie Beach in the National Park depending on conditions.

If you love art, surfing and jewellery then I highly recommend you check out Studio Surf located on Osprey Drive in Marion Bay. In the Spring and Summer months the gallery is also open for coffee and you can meet Miff and Jasmine who are Marion Bay's local artists. Art workshops are also available here as well as at Ballara Arts Centre in Warooka.

Food scene

The 'Tav' is a great place to have lunch or dinner. Be sure to book as there are usually 'sitting times' and can be booked out in peak periods. I recommend asking for a table near the windows. If feeling social ask for a 'barrel table' near the bar and pool table to have a yarn with the locals. The Tavern also sells takeaway drinks from the bar. All food on the menu is also available for takeaway and you can call up to order if preferred. The 'Marion Bay' pizza is great!

If you enjoy cooking your own seafood but don't really want to catch it then I recommend stopping in at Lower Yorke Seafood as you head to Marion Bay. Just 5 minutes past Warooka on your way down you will see this business and they have the freshest seafood in the area. Remember you can not buy fresh seafood in Marion Bay as it is illegal to purchase from someone that is not a commercial fisherman so locals can not sell on their catch.

Over the summer period there is now a Fish and Chip and burger truck located here from early afternoon to around 8pm serving local fish from the area . There is also a coffee and snack van in the national park usually located between China-man’s Hat Beach and West Cape beach daily . (Look for the surfboard sign).

Sightseeing

You will need to pre-book your car pass online to go into the national park or can do at the office during business hours of 9am-3pm Monday to Saturday. Either way you need to use a credit card/ debit card as they do not take cash . Cost is approximately $10 for the day or very cheap for a yearly pass too. There is usually just one coffee/ food van in the park which has a sign up on the road when driving in to let you know where they will be. So best to take some snacks with you or grab a coffee from the General Store or Tavern before hand. Take your bathers, walking shoes and camera as the views and beaches are spectacular and so untouched. Watch out for the emus during the day and the kangaroos at sunrise and sunset.

If you are into surfing, fishing, or diving or even just swimming then I recommend Daley Head's where you will also see Blue Bay, Dust Bowls, Salmon Hole and Baby Daley's. All are surfing beaches with Blue Bay and Dustbowls being beautiful for swimming as well. The road to these spots is a bit bumpy so take it easy. Phone reception is only at Salmon Hole to Dustbowls. There is no cafes etc here so pack a picnic!

Definitely a must see at sunset whilst on the Yorke Peninsular. This beach is full of history as well as the old historic Inneston gypsum mining township on the way. Head there within the national park and take a few drinks with you and your camera.

Because the front porch is made from this island's original jetty, I highly recommend visiting Althorpe Island and learning it's history and experiencing its wildlife. You can do Eco and Fishing tours through Reef Encounters Fishing Charters located in Marion Bay and run by a lovely couple with an interest in looking after our beautiful ocean here. Or, for the 'salty sailer' fishing types I recommend 'Bottom End Fishing Charters'.

Fishing in Marion Bay is world renowned and it wouldn't be a complete visit without jumping on a charter and heading to some of the islands to try your hand at catching Nannygai, Tuna, King George Whiting and many other species of fish that are abundant in these pristine waters. There are several ship wrecks hugging the coastline of Marion Bay. From Williama's to Ethels to Stenhouse Bay Jetty and beyond. You can get guide books and information from the General Store and National Park office to check out their location and whether you can dive, swim / walk out to or boat to these wrecks. But all are visible from land and have interesting stories.
