Bathing

If you are a bathing nymph and in Bergen in the summer, you can dive into the pools at Nordnes Sjøbad . The bathing facility is located close to the Aquarium and within walking distance to the center. Not only do you get a bath in the sea, there is also a pool with diving board, as well as a shower facility. Great for a trip with friends or for families with slightly older children. Out on the point you will find a nice park. At the far end is a picture-worthy totem pole that Bergen received from the twin city of Seattle, on the occasion of the city's 900th anniversary.

The Hanseatic Museum and Schøtstuene are situated centrally on Bryggen in Bergen. The museums show how the German merchants from The Hanseatic League lived and worked. From 1350 to 1750 these merchants traded stockfish and grains from their office in Bergen. The Hanseatic Museum opened in 1872 and Schøtstuene in 1938. Schøtstuene is to be found next to St. Mary’s Church. These rooms were assembly halls for the Hanseatic merchants during winter time. Due to the danger of fire, Schøtstuene were placed separately behind the other office buildings. In winter hot meals were served here. The buildings were also used for teaching and as courtrooms, meeting rooms and party rooms. The museum consists of three assembly rooms and a kitchen.

Perfect view of the city mountain behind the apartment. At the top of Løvstakken - 479 masl, you will find perhaps the finest cairn on the city mountains. The cairn is expertly built in gray stone with joints, measuring 2X2X3.5 meters with a wrought iron wind indicator on top. On the east side there is a mark with the year 1945, also in wrought iron. The history behind the mark and the cairn is unknown, but it is not inconceivable that it may have something to do with the liberation after the war. You should start here: https://www.google.com/maps/dir//60.3746544,5.3292201/@60.3746261,5.3251523,16z

Gullfjellet is a very popular hiking area both summer and winter. Gullfjellstoppen, which rises 987 meters above sea level, is the highest mountain on the Bergen Peninsula. The trip from Gullbotn over the top is a classic. The area is suitable for ski use. But beware; Gullfjellet can also be extremely exposed to the weather. In inclement weather and fog, you must be careful, follow the cairn row and remember that the arrow on each cairn points towards the next. Always bring clear, compass and extra clothes. https://ut.no/turforslag/115699/gullfjellstoppen-fra-gullbotn

Bryggens Museum’s main exhibit uses thousands of artifacts and modern historical and archaeological research to let you come closer to the everyday lives of the medieval people of Bergen and Western Norway. Runic inscriptions with gossip, poems and spells tells us about faith and love, while ceramics from Europe and the Middle-East shows an extensive and international trade network. The new exhibit also displays the unique Guddal-garment – a nearly thousand year old find, which is one of extremely few relatively intact pieces of Norwegian medieval clothing.

Founded in the 15th c., St. George’s was a hospital for lepers until the middle of the 20th c. The present day buildings date back to the 18th c. Between 1850 and 1900 Bergen had three hospitals for leprosy patients and the largest concentration of patients in Europe. The city’s oldest leprosy hospital, St. George’s Hospital, is now not only a monument to thousands of personal tragedies, it is also an important arena for the dissemination of Norwegian work and research on leprosy. In many parts of the world leprosy is commonly known as Hansen’s disease, after the Norwegian physician Gerhard Armauer Hansen who discovered the leprosy bacillus in Bergen in 1873. St. George’s Hospital was probably raised on the grounds of Nonneseter convent in the 1400s. The patients may have received plants for food and medical use from the convent. The herb garden we meet today is from the 1990s. It is open to the public in the museum opening hours.

If you are a fan of magical architecture, you should take the trip to Lysøen, just outside Bergen. This 18th-century villa, with opening hours in the summer months, once belonged to the Norwegian violin virtuoso and composer Ole Bull, who transformed it into a fairytale realm, complete with romantic paths, ponds and gazebos. If it rains too much to take a stroll around the property, enjoy a guided tour inside the villa or warm up for a good cup of coffee at the on-site café. Lysøen itself is the perfect place for walking with a beautiful forest, beautiful viewpoints and pleasant picnic areas.

Did you know that before there were around 1,000 stave churches in Norway, but that there are only 28 left today? Experience one of these unique constructions, taken straight out of the Viking Age, at Fantoft Stave Church, just 20 minutes outside Bergen city center. This spectacular church was originally built in Fortun in Sogn in 1150, but was moved to Fantoft in 1883, before it burned down in 1992. If you are going to visit Bergen during the summer months, a visit outside the city to the Norwegian royal family's holiday home, Gamlehaugen, should be on your to-do list. The wave power plant is a popular place for photographers and those who like weather, wind and waves. The wave power plant is best to experience after it has been a few days with a lot of wind. The wave power plant was opened in 1985. After three years of operation, the plant crashed. In 1988, another attempt was made to run it with a new concept. In 1991, the plant crashed again and operations were abandoned. For many years, only parts of the drawbridge stood. In 2015, this was also a sign of a powerful storm. Now only the concrete columns remain. IMPORTANT! The wave power plant has become a popular destination, but unfortunately there are many who take great chances here. Le Mathis Bistro

New french restaurant in Bergen. Really good and great staff.
A delightfully lit restaurant, housed in an art museum overlooking a lake and a park; warm, knowledgeable service adds to the experience. Seasonal ‘short’ and ‘long’ menus showcase the Norwegian larder, and the intelligently crafted, balanced dishes burst with flavour, letting each main ingredient shine. One MICHELIN Star: High quality cooking, worth a stop!
