At 196m tall, Maungawhau or Mount Eden is the highest volcano in Auckland. Maungawhau is a large, elongated scoria cone consisting of two overlapping cones which erupted in close succession about 28,000 years ago. The older, lower northern cone had its crater filled with scoria ejected by second eruption. The southern cone is the youngest and tallest, with an impressive crater 180 meters in diameter and 50 meters deep. When Maungawhau erupted, lava flowed out around the base of the cone and across the valley below in all directions. The earlier flows spread northeast to present-day Khyber Pass Rd and Newmarket, southwest to Balmoral Rd, and west around Gribblehirst Park in Morningside. Later flows were cooler and thicker, traveling a shorter distance and forming a steep-faced rock base around the maunga. From the summit, you can enjoy spectacular views over the city, harbours and network of other maunga. Walk through Mount Eden village’s small local galleries; with a community of creative artists and writers, the suburb is known for being the home of some of Auckland’s most exciting modern art. And if you like affordable but sophisticated cuisine, take a wander around and pick a local restaurant.

Aotea Square is a large paved public area in the Auckland CBD used for open-air public events including fairs, protest rallies, music festivals, rock concerts and the annual seeing-in of the New Year. A number of art works are in Aotea Square: • Archway 'Waharoa' (Gateway in Māori) was formed in wood and copper by Selwyn Muru, a Māori sculptor. This is an expressionist version of a traditional Māori entry gate. • Bronze statue of Sir Dove-Myer Robinson, a former mayor of Auckland. This work was made in 2003 by New Zealand sculptor Toby Twiss. • Bronze figure of a Māori warrior by Lyndon Smith, commissioned in the 1960s for the lobby of the Auckland Saving Bank's new building on Queen Street. • Fountain by New Zealand sculptor Terry Stringer. This angular bronze ""mountain"" was commissioned in 1979 to form the centrepiece for the new square, and its form echoes the roofline of the contemporary Aotea Centre. • 19th century bronze statue of George Eden, Lord Auckland, Governor of India, after whom the Auckland is named. This statue was originally erected in Calcutta and was purchased from the government of India by Auckland City Council in the early 1960s.

Just across Auckland harbour from the central business district, the historic suburb of Devonport is full of charm and character. Decades of relative isolation by road, followed by visionary town planning, has preserved Devonport's heritage. The streets are lined with wooden colonial villas built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. There are also some large stately homes along the shore facing the city centre. From the ferry wharf, the main street leads inland towards the volcanic cone Mount Victoria. Preserved buildings along the street accommodate cafes and small shops selling crafts, antiques and collectibles. The adjacent naval base was the main focus of Devonport for many decades. A museum at the base offers a wonderful collection of navy memorabilia and fascinating stories of New Zealand's naval history.
