Food scene

The Eversfield Organic Dartmoor Inn, which sits just a stone’s throw from Tavistock and Princetown, is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner reservations, with breath-taking views across Dartmoor as the perfect backdrop. The menu is 100% organic with everything sourced from the Eversfield Organic farm and Market Garden, or from a wonderful selection of small, local producers. The traditional Devon bar offers a fine selection of the best local, organic ales from the barrel, alongside organic wines, cocktails, mixers and soft drinks. Our restaurant helps fulfil our closed-loop zero-waste ideology with any produce that is perfectly imperfect used as ingredients in our organic menu and any excess food from the inn is then taken back to the farm to be composted.

It’s an unspoken rule that all walks on Dartmoor must be marked with a hearty pub lunch and a local tipple and this 16th century inn, a short detour from some of the National Park’s best trails, ensures the long-held tradition continues. Winter pursuits around nearby Lydford Gorge are rewarded at The Dartmoor Inn with seasonal classics such as Creedy Carver duck with creamy mash, forest-green kale and red wine jus (plus a cosy spot by the crackling open fire if you’re lucky). In summer, it’s the offer of Jail Ale battered hake, triple cooked chips and a tall G&T that tempts passers-by off the path and onto the patio.

Burrator Reservoir is situated within Dartmoor, and the tranquil water and surrounding mixed woodland contrasts sharply with the open moor and the rugged Dartmoor tors. A trip here can be combined with a walk across the moors, or enjoyed as a trip of its own with plenty to do – from walking and taking in the views, to fishing for rainbow and brown trout (just be sure to get a permit, available online or by calling South West Lakes). Devon has relatively few lakes, but the situation and quality of these make them a hidden gem in Devon’s crown.
