If Sinaia ever sounded familiar to you, it’s because it indeed takes its name after the Sinai Mountain and the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt, which Mihai Cantacuzino, a ruler at that time, visited at the end of the XVII century, before returning home and deciding to build the Sinaia Monastery, at the foot of the Bucegi Mountains, in an untouched forest area.

Less than two centuries later, the town (whose first settlers were monks) grew so beautifully that it caught the eye of kings. In the late XIX century, Carol the I commissioned the Peleș Castle, the first fully electrified castle in Europe and considered now one of the most important historical places in Romania.

Carol I also comissioned the Dimitrie Ghica Park, where numerous centennial tree species continue to grow to this day.

Another building of note is the George Enescu Memorial House. Built between 1923-1926, it was a source of inspiration for the great composer, who created multiple of his works here, including his only opera, Oedipe, and also a place of residence until 1946.

Pelisor castle was built at the very end of the 19th Century as a private residence for the heirs to the throne of Carol I, Ferdinand and Marie and reflects many of the relevant design features of the time. As such, Art Nouveau interior design features heavily in the house and fans of this genre will find the house a delight. The one exception is a dazzling ‘Gold Room’ covered almost completely in 24 carat gold leaf. It is a complete contrast to Peles castle being much more understated (apart from the one exception above) but very refined and equally good. Although all the explanatory boards are in Romania, English written guides are handed out on entry. It is generally much less crowded than Peles.

A very beautiful place built at the beginning of the 19th century as per the plans of the Romanian architect Antonescu. Inside you find a theatre, Mirrors Room and the Baccarat Room, all equally beautiful. 4 art galleries are on the ground floor and they deserve all the attention of visitors, particularly the one displaying the collection donated by the painter Augustin Costinescu and his wife. A secret underground passage of 70 m connects the Casino with the Hotel Palace (it was used once by the players) and apparently the municipality is doing its best to open it to the public.
