Battery Point Lighthouse and its museum are located at the foot of Lighthouse Way in Crescent City, California. This is an active lighthouse that serves as a private aid to navigation. Its oil lamps were first lit on December 10, 1856. Lighthouse keepers still reside there. The Battery Point Lighthouse is open to the public for tours which include the opportunity to look into the personal quarters of keepers and their families and at the furniture and artifacts left behind since the 1850’s. Tours include a climb into the light tower. There are displays of many maritime artifacts, photographs, and documents that chronicle its history.

Start with the Touch and Feel Tide Pool where you will have the opportunity to see and touch many of the strange and interesting creatures that live within the rocks near the shores of the Pacific Northwest. Next, descend into the aquarium where you will see sharks, bat rays, seals and sea lions. You will learn about the life of sea creatures that live right off of our coast here in California. Then you will be given the opportunity of a life time to pet a real shark. So many who come to visit Ocean World rate this as the thing they liked best about the tour, to touch and feel one of the most amazing creatures living on earth. You will then wrap up the tour with an intimate Seal or Sea Lion Performance.

When it is not foggy, this overlook reveals miles of beach, the harbor of Crescent City, and views of jagged off-shore sea stacks. Incredible sunset photos can be taken here too. This is one of the most picturesque locations in the Pacific Northwest.

Located off of highway 199 in the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, Society Hole is a popular swimming spot for locals. My family has been swimming here for over 100 years. Although there is plenty of parking near the river, expect a quarter mile walk to the best (more hidden) swimming spots.

Patrick's Point, also known as Agate Beach, is the best place in the Pacific Northwest to hunt for agates. I also believe that it's the most beautiful beach anywhere near crescent city. Patrick’s Point State Park is a spectacular section of California’s coastal Redwood country, with 120 campsites, and a robust and family-friendly interpretive program. Head to the Visitor Center and pick up the Redwood EdVentures Quest brochure, a “treasure map” that guides kids on an exploratory hike throughout the park. There is so much to discover here: Agate Beach’s semi-precious stones polished by the surf; a Native American village re-created by members of the indigenous Yurok tribe; and the tidepools and network of trails connecting to the dramatic shoreline, dotted with massive rock formations. The wildlife is abundant, as this is a popular grey whale-watching spot and home to sea lions, seals, black bears, and numerous bird species.

Food scene

SeaQuake is a local favorite that serves good food and seasonal beers. The food is made using local ingredients and the beer is brewed onsite by a local brewmaster. The spacious restaurant can easily accommodate large groups and families. Reservations are recommended as it is always very busy.

Without a doubt CC's Diner has the best burgers in Del Norte County. Whether it's a classic cheeseburger or a custom creation there is no better place to go. To top it off, the ice cream selection is quite large and the price for an ice cream cone is reasonable.

Chart Room is a casual waterfront diner popular with locals known for its clam chowder in a bread bowl and fish and chips. Window seats offer views of the docks and seals that stay on the rocks next door to the restaurant.

Redwoods

Stout Grove is the world’s most scenic stand of redwoods. It’s not all that large, and it doesn’t have the biggest trees, but for sheer photogenic beauty nothing beats this extraordinary grove on a sunny afternoon. A minimalist approach to development has left the grove largely natural and unspoiled. The usual signs with tree names and heights have been removed, since they encouraged people to go off-trail and damage the trees. The tall fences that used to surround the trail were also removed (however, in 2018 the park added a large viewing platform to the grove’s largest tree, the Stout Tree, because too many people were going off-trail to walk around the tree). There are no interpretive leaflets to read and no cross-sections of thousand-year-old redwoods to look at. There’s a tiny visitor’s center in the campground across the river, but it’s so well-hidden that you’ll never find it unless you go looking for it. This is a must visit for anyone coming to see the redwoods.

This short roadside loop meanders around a flat on the banks of the Smith River. At one time it was the most popular trail in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, but in 2011 the trailhead was moved from a very visible location on the side of Highway 199 to a well-hidden location on nearby Walker Road. Two small signs at the old Highway 199 pullout redirect visitors to Walker Road, but the new trailhead is currently unmarked. As a result, although the trail is still popular, it’s much less-used than before. It’s also more enjoyable now that it doesn’t start and end at the busy highway. Simpson-Reed Trail is a must-see location for visitors to Crescent City.

Located in the northern part of the parks, Howland Hill Road is suitable for drivers not afraid of dust and getting very, very close to redwoods. Part of this 10-mile road once was a stage coach road and most of Howland Hill Road is narrow. Recreational vehicles, trucks or vehicles with trailers are too wide for this road. Allow an hour to drive the length of the road which is located inside Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. There are many trailheads along the road, and parking and pullouts are limited.

This rewarding hike though old-growth redwoods is very popular for those in the north wanting a bit of a challenge - both physically and logistically. Located in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, visitors should consider this as a half-day experience to access and then walk this 5.5 mile round trip trail. During this walk, you will follow riparian areas, see "Fern Falls" and lots of big trees. Logistically, this is a good hiking option if you are near Crescent City with a smaller vehicle and you are unable to drive an hour south to the other longer hiking trails in the redwood parks. Parking at the trailhead may be limited, and in summer your vehicle will get very dusty.
