Food scene

The food in New Orleans is so famously good that people travel here just to experience it. Yes, it's as good as you've heard...and there are lots and lots of styles to choose from. This list is far from definitive, but highlights some of the standout spots that we find ourselves returning to again and again. We hope this list enhances your taste of NOLA.
Just across the street at the corner, The Orange Store serves up surprisingly excellent po-boys and is good spot to pick up snacks and drinks (and t-shirts and glassware). They’re open most nights until 11 pm. Pro tip: Make sure to ask for your sandwich on “French” (bread) and “dressed” for all the fixings.

So, so tasty - open for breakfast and lunch. Established in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the name of this restaurant is a nod to the famous line “There’s no place like home”. Dishing up generous servings of classic breakfast food with a minders southern twist, any of their locations is a great choice, but this one is five minutes from the apartment. Their special margaritas and Bloody Mary’s are deceivingly potent. Have more than one at your peril.

Buffa’s is a classic NOLA bar and lounge; a little rough-and-ready; it has solid food and a varied music calendar with performances most nights of the week. We love the friendly staff and the jambalaya. Conveniently located just around the corner from the apartment and a great place to chill out after a day of sightseeing.

Relaxed option for casual dining and good beers. The food here is delicious - think sandwiches, sausage plates, etc. one of our favorite places to grab a bite for lunch or dinner.

This spot is just a few blocks from the apartment and one of the very best sandwich shops in the world. Verti Marte is open 24 hours and is justly famous. Perfect for when you’re planning a day out and want food to go, or when you’re stumbling home famished after a night carousing in the French Quarter. Pro tip: order anything but the mufaletta.

Elevated in every sense of the word. A gorgeous, unique dining room, excellent service and most importantly, world-class cooking. One of the best restaurants in the city. Amazing for a romantic dinner, a family gathering, or groups of friends. Reservations highly recommended. Pro-tip: They offer a price fixe lunch on Fridays that is one of the best bargains in NOLA.

I'm not typically all about recommending a place just for drinks, but...the daiquiris here are the just about the best in the Quarter. Strong, tasty, and generously sized. They're not cheap, but you get your money's worth. Grab one to go during your French Quarter wanderings, and relax into the rhythm of NOLA. I can't recommend the pizza, as I haven't had it, but I will say it smelled amazing. Pro tip: One of these drinks will be more than enough for most people.

A long-standing local favorite, this friendly and relaxed coffee shop serves all sorts of caffeinated beverages to start your day off right (or to keep your day going). They also have a nice selection of hand scooped ice cream to choose from. Pro tip: The outdoor seating is a nice place to meet the neighbors.

Feeling like a calorie splurge? Skip the over-trafficked Cafe du Monde and come here for the amazing beignets in a variety of flavors and treatments. The breakfast beignets (think sausage, egg and cheese) are especially good and quite filling. The dining room is spacious and simple. The pralines are nothing to sneeze at either! Ms. Loretta is still there just about every day, so be sure to say hi.

When you tire of the richness of classic New Orleans dishes, this "cheap and cheerful" Thai spot is just around the corner from the apartment and is well priced and very tasty. Order at the counter and take a seat with your table number. Quick service will deliver very good Thai food in the cafeteria-like setting - there is a bar with very good specialty cocktails, to boot.

Nightlife

Bars, theaters, music and entertainment venues
Offbeat, friendly, and very entertaining, the Allways features a more formal theater space in the back, and a bar with a stage up front. From Dixieland jazz to rock bands, productions of classic plays to burlesque nights, there’s always something good going on at the Allways. Check their website for listings or just pass by.

Neighborhoods

Our charming neighborhood is a collection of historic homes with a fiercely local vibe. The second-oldest formal neighborhood in New Orleans was once plantation country, and has evolved over the centuries into one of the most distinctive residential districts in the US. The world-famous Frenchman Street with its many music venues can be found just a few blocks from the apartment. Delicious restaurants, shops and galleries filled with work by local makers are but a few of the many other pleasures of this lovely part of the Big Easy.

Sightseeing

There are so many famous sights in NOLA, that it would be impossible to list them all. On this list, we've included places we like to take people, but of course, it's far from comprehensive. We've also included a few places outside of the city, in case you have a yen to see one of the many remaining plantation homes along the River Road.
A little farther afield, but worth a day trip if you want to experience a plantation tour with an extraordinary perspective and historic slant in a beautiful setting. Many of the plantation tours will tell you how large the house is, how many candelabra were shipped win from France, etc. but at Laura you’ll learn about how the household and farm operated. You’ll learn about Laura’s mixed family (which was quite common at the time) and many of the enslaved people who worked the land and in the home. One of the very best of these types of historical tours.

Purportedly one of the “most haunted” houses in America, The Myrtles certainly drips in atmosphere and it’s easy to see why many would believe they’ve seen ghosts here. The property plays this up and you can take ghost tours of the main house and the grounds. If the tour of the beautiful home and grounds doesn’t convince you, perhaps spend in one of the guest rooms in the main house and see for yourself.

One of New Orleans’ newest amenities is the delightful and pretty Crescent Park. Stretching downriver from the Marigny all the way to the Bywater, it’s become a local favorite for much needed public outdoor space. It doesn’t hurt that it has great views of the river, either.

Audubon Park and the surrounding area are lovely to visit. A perfect place to take your muffaletta and have lunch. Nearby are the campuses of both Loyola and Tulane Universities, each of which has a beautiful campus as well. The zoo at the park is a treat for young ones. If you walk all the way around the zoo to the back side, you can see several of the exhibits through the fences from the park. It's always fun to see the giraffe's heads poking out as you walk through the park.

Shopping

The greatest “junk” store on earth? Perhaps not, but this is a very entertaining and large collection of antiques, art, furniture, clothing and just about everything else you can think of. There’s a large section of very good (and reasonably priced) Mexican handicrafts along with the bric-a-brac of the ages. Usually open Thursday - Monday, but call ahead if you’ve got your heart set on visiting, just to make sure. A fun stop while exploring the Bywater.

Curious about voodoo? This very approachable shop can help demystify this religious practice. They carry a nice selection of house-made candles, oils, incense, and yes, dolls, that can be used for a variety of purposes and intentions. Elias and his staff will make you feel welcome and relaxed - they're very willing to answer any questions you may have about the wares and their uses. Pro tip: Check hours in advance and be aware that opening times may not strictly adhere to what's posted. (In our experience, they tend to open a little later than posted.)

Super cute gift/clothing/jewelry store with lots of unique, locally-made items. Looking for that perfect NOLA gift that's not just beads or a magnet? Come here to find something more special, made by an artist from Louisiana.
