This is a perfect spot to see all of Ljubljana from above. When you’re looking up from Ljubljana’s squares, the castle seems dauntingly high. If you’ve got the mettle you can try to get up there on foot, but there’s also a tourist train and a funicular railway. The castle has changed a lot since it first came together 900 years ago. The early stone wood and stone fortress was succeeded by more practical military buildings, becoming an Arsenal in the 16th century as a regional bulwark against an Ottoman invasion. The main courtyard is free to enter, and has a cafe, nightclub, galleries and a restaurant. You have to pay to ascend the watchtower to look over Ljubljana, and included in this is a “Time Machine” tour. This recounts Ljubljana’s key historical events with 3D animations and guides in period costume.

This is an iconic bridge in the strict city center. The four intimidating dragons that stand sentinel on each corner of this bridge are an emblem for Ljubljana and show up all over the city. Taken from the coat of arms they’re strikingly lifelike (supposing dragons existed!), were rendered in sheet copper in the A. M. Beschorner factory in Vienna, and designed by the bridge’s architect Jurij Zaninović. The bridge was opened in 1901 and is in the Viennese Secessionist style, an offshoot of Art Nouveau. At the time it was also a technical achievement as one of the first reinforced concrete bridges in Europe.

.One hour drive from Ljubljana....and you can see lake Bled with an island. 6 km long trail around the lake is just long enough for simple recreation (walks or bike rides). This trail also leads to sightseeing rises – Castle Hill and nearby hills with splendid views. Take a rest on one of the benches and enjoy the view on the lake with an island and the Karavanke mountains in the distance, and observe the ducks and swans playing on the surface of the lake. Rowing is a very popular sports activity in this area as Bled can pride itself with a long tradition of the rowing sport and with hosting international rowing competitions. During the summer visitors can cool down in the lake or enjoy on the Castle beach which each year attracts a great number of tourists. In extremely low winter temperatures the surface of the lake freezes. Would you dare to ice skate on its surface? Once, there was a tectonic basin located at the place of the present lake, which was later on carved by the Bohinj glacier. The glacier found itself in front of an obstacle – a giant rock which it carved and chafed against for so long that only the island we know today remained. The ice melted and the basin was filled with water, thus creating a 2.12 km long and up to 1.30 km wide Lake Bled. Its maximum depth reaches up to 30.6 m, making it ideal for diving exploration.

Near Ljubljana and only few kilometres from the town of Kamnik you will find the bottom station of the cable car to Velika planina, which takes you amongst the green pastures of the mountain plateau in the heart of the Kamnik Alps. We recommend that you take a hike to the herdsmen’s settlementand feel the simple way of the herdsmen’s life, taste their dairy products and admire the unique architecture of the cottages which define Velika planina. To those, who are more active, the mountain offers ideal possibilities for hiking and various mountain-cycling tours. You can choose between two routes when you exit the cable car. You can either continue the drive by the double seat lift Šimnovec, or set off to the top of the mountain by foot (30 minute walk). In any case, we recommend that you walk a little further on the gentle slope of the mountain for additional 15 minutes and visit the herdsmen’s settlement, which is 15 minutes away. Pass the lodging house Zeleni rob and follow the signs for the herdsmen’s settlement- Mala planina. Cablecar takes you from the valley to the mountain in 5 minutes. What to do on Velika planina? The chapel of Snow Mary, which originally stood at the same place before the Second World War, is located slightly above the herdsmen’s settlement. It was burnt down by German soldiers during the war, and was rebuilt in 1988 on the herdsmen’s initiative. It was consecrated to Snow Mary and this is why 5th of August presents a special holiday for the chapel and the entire herdsmen’s settlement. During the summer, the masses are held every Sunday and several thousands visitors attend the sacred mass or the midnight service on Christmas Eve. Preskar museumThe museum is located in the herdsmen’s settlement and is opened every day during the pasture season. It is distinguished by its appearance, since the small, grey herdsmen’s hut is located in the stone part of the settlement. After the Second World War, Andrej Preskar built his cottage with the original oval floor plan, as it was before the war. Today, this is the only cottage which is distinct from the other cottages with its shape, size and modestly decorated interior. Among other things in the cottage, there is also an example of “trnič”- a special sort of cheese known in this area. You can visit Preskar museum every day in summer, from 10am – 3pm.     In the summer months you can refresh yourself with a true shepherd’s snack – sour milk and buckwheat mush. Shepherds will also happily serve home-made cheese or other dairy products. You can find many Slovenian delicious dishes (jota, rice, goulash, sausage with sour cabbage, buckwheat mush) also in the restaurant Zeleni rob.  We recommend you to try sweet cottage cheese dumplings with fruit dressing.

Lake Jasna Lake Jasna is a small, aquamarine lake with white sand around its rim and the high mountain peaks of the Julian Alps as a dramatic backdrop. It lies at the confluence of the two branches of the Pisnica stream in the far northwestern corner of Slovenia, just south of the alpine resort of Kranjska Gora. A statue of Zlatorog, the golden-horned ibex, stands proudly at the entrance and provides perfect tourist photo opportunities. Lake Jasna Review Tucked into the far northwestern corner of Slovenia, only 2 kilometres to the south of Kranjska Gora, in the direction of the Vrsic mountain pass, is a picturesque lake called Jasna which marks the beginning of the Triglav National Park. A delightful walk from the centre of Kranjska Gora through a small park and along a road, or a lovely walk along the river by the Korona Hotel will bring you to the lake. By car, it’s about a 5 minute or less drive from Kranjska Gora or about an hour from Slovenia’s capital Ljubljana in average traffic. You can park on the main road right by the lake for free or there is a car park a few minutes walk away. The name ‘Jasna’ derives from the Slovenian word for ‘clear,’ and it is quickly apparent how the lake got its name. The Julian Alps dominate the scenery and on a clear, sunny, calm day the water looks like a piece of glass reflecting everything so perfectly. On a boulder by the lake stands the dark bronze statue of the Zlatorog, or Goldenhorn – the magical stag believed to guard the ridges around the lake. Don’t forget to take a photo or two! The circular walk that wraps around the lake is pleasant with plenty of places to sit and enjoy the remarkable mountain views and fresh air. The path is very manageable for pretty much anyone and suitable for strollers. There is a lookout tower which you can climb up to the top for some fantastic photos of the views, thought the ladders are a little steep. The ‘Library by the Lake’, a little hut where you can borrow a book to read is available too. The lake is popular with locals and tourists alike. In 2015, it underwent a facelift that even boosted its popularity. They arranged a better access for swimmers and sunbathers, added new beach areas, opened a bar and ice cream parlour, and built a new three-level wooden diving platform which resembles a castle turret. There are places to get changed for swimming, and toilets too. During the summer the locals now use the lake as a substitute for a seaside so it’s quite busy at weekends but very quiet during the week. The lake is also a very popular fishing spot. Of course, fly fishing is the only type allowed. In winter, the lake freezes and is a fabulous place to go ice skating. All in all, the Jasna lake is a stunningly beautiful place to see with a lovely circular walk that wraps around the lake, incredible views, with a 3 level diving platform and central platform to swim to. There are plenty of different ways to enjoy the lake including picnicking, swimming, walking, fishing and ice skating (in the winter). You can purchase refreshments and ice-creams or even borrow a book to read! The area is spotlessly clean and the water looks as though you can drink it. The whole place has an air of unpretentiousness and is a great place to spend an afternoon.
