Neighbourhoods
Just a 10 minute drive from the beach is Waihi. It is especially notable for its history as the richest gold mine in NZ and still in operation today. Take a walk around the Rim or visit the Waihi Gold Discovery Centre. The Goldfields vintage railway runs between Waihi and Waikino, where you can find relics from the early gold rush days. Around the town you will see wonderful old buildings and Waihi is proud of its history and has a heritage trail that points out places of interest.
