Downham has won numerous awards over the years for its beauty. At the foot of Pendle hill it’s a stunning little village complete with church ice cream parlour and a gorgeous village pub the Assheton Arms which serves great food and local real ales. A great starting point for a circular walk approx 4 miles over stunning countryside. Always great to finish a walk in a beautiful old pub for refreshments and if the weather is kind sit outside and admire the stunning views. If you don’t fancy the walk just wonder to the bottom of the village to the ice cream shop and maybe feed the Downham ducks on the the little stream which trickles through the village.

The gorgeous market town of clitheroe is just a short drive away and offers the castle, independent shops, bars, restaurants and now what is quickly becoming the famous Bowland brewery a favourite destination with visitors. Not only does it off an incredible selection of real ales and great food it has an indoor food hall offering locally sourced ingredients, artisan breads, cheeses and a wide selection of other goodies. We love going here and on the way back we often call at Shackleton’s garden centre before passing through Chatburn, there you can call at Roy Porters butchers and get one of his Pork pies, voted the best in the country by the Chris Evans show on BBC radio 2. Who doesn’t love a pork pie if you’re a meat eater?
