Beaches to Explore

There are more beaches in Cornwall than I can write about, below are a few of our favorites. It is always best to check the tide times before visiting beaches as at high tide a lot are underwater! www.cornwall-beaches.co.uk has tide times for all of the popular spots.
Crantock offers a large expanse of golden sands backed by dunes between the Pentire Headland to the west and the Gannel river to the east. Popular for swimming, snorkelling, surfing and wind-surfing with board/canoe hire on the beach. Dolphins accasionally visit too!

Situated at the mouth of the River Camel, near Padstow is Hawker's Cove beach. At low tide the beach forms an expanse of sand stretching almost 1.5 miles from the old lifeboat station and joining up with Harbour Cove. Despite being a beautiful spot and located close to Padstow the beach here doesn't really get crowded.

Walks to do

There are a myriad of walks in Cornwall, from the coastal path to wild woodlands. There are a couple of walking guidebooks in the lodge and the National Trust and www.iwalkcornwall.co.uk are good resources.
This walk around the Lizard Peninsula, the southerly tip of mainland Britain, takes in dramatic cliff scenery, rare wildflowers and an interesting coastal history. Kynance Cove has a sandy beach and islands of serpentine stone. The bay attracted visitors in Victorian times and still captivates people today.

This walk passes the pumping engine house of Wheal Coates before reaching the coastguard lookout on St Agnes Head. The route follows the coast around the headland to Trevaunance Cove passing alongside a number of old mine workings, now overgrown with wildflowers, and along lanes and footpaths to the upper part of Wheal Coates before descending to Chapel Porth.

This walk has great views across St Ives Bay, and out to the lighthouse on Godrevy Island just off shore. The long beach, the island and the lighthouse and the tales of shipwrecks inspire everyone. In spring the coastal grasslands are full of wildflowers and fulmars nest noisily in the cliffs. In autumn huge flocks of migrating seabirds pass through.
