Entertainment & Activities

Although the first kilometre can be busy with restaurants and deck chairs, you'll find some more secluded sites, with watering holes, at regular intervals as you walk south. Watersports are becoming more popular and include jetskiing, kiteboarding, waterskiing and banana boats. However, please do take care with these activities. Accidents can and do happen - some unfortunately fatal - and you will not get much sympathy from the Thai authorities if you have been reckless.

It is a beautiful spot to visit. You will pass through stunning countryside and hills on your drive there that will only take 1.5 hours or so. The waterfall has 16 steps, making it one of the highest in Thailand and those who make it to the top will be rewarded by superb views over Thailand and towards Burma. It should be noted, however, that progressing further than the third stage will be arduous and should only be attempted by those fit enough to do so.

The beach here is not one of the area's best, but it is passable and what attracts most people is its peace and privacy. The national park of Khao Sam Roi Yot is located in the vicinity and should be seen if you are staying in Pranburi, or even Hua Hin. Hua Hin's fishing fleet moved to Paknampran a number of years ago and a visit to see it and the accompanying hustle and bustle is definitely worthwhile. Pranburi Forest Park covers a large area and has a peaceful pine-fringed beach and mangrove nature trails.

Arts & Culture

The Royal connection, that Hua Hin still has to this day, started around the turn of the 20th century when a member of the Thai Royal Family, Prince Chakrabhongse, came to Hua Hin on a hunting trip with Russian nobility. He liked the town and returned to build the first Thai beach villa in Hua Hin. King Rama VI then built a summer retreat here and even later King Rama VII built yet another palace, naming it Klaikangwon - "far from worries". This Palace is still in use today by the Royal Family and indeed they spend most of their days there now in Hua Hin.

Hua Hin's station is one of the oldest in Thailand and its main feature is The Royal Waiting Room that used to welcome King and his court when they were visiting the town. Originally, it was situated at Sanamchan Palace in Nakom Pathom and was known as Plub Pla Sanamchan. Eventually, the room was tranported to Hua Hin. It is designed in the same style as Maruekkhathayawan Palace and is an attraction not to be missed if you are staying in Hua Hin.

Designed by His Majesty King Rama VI in 1923 and is a superb example of classic raised Thai architechure. Of particular note are three two-storied wooden pavilions facing out to sea. Halls are linked together throughout the palace and there are residential areas for royal consort members and naturally for The Royal Family. The Palace is open to the public daily from 08.00-16.00 and is a must-see whilst you are in Hua Hin for a real glimpse back into Thailand's Royal past.

Impressive example of temple architecture. It is important to be respectful at all times within the temple grounds. Always dress conservatively, so for women no short skirts or bikini-type tops and for men, decent tailored shorts are de rigeur, with long trousers preferred. Do not ever climb upon a Buddha statue or touch one on the head. When in the presence of monks, women are not allowed to touch them, so if a female is offering anything to one, the offering should be placed in front of the monk for him to accept, rather than given hand-to-hand.

Sightseeing

If you're looking for some spectacular views of Hua Hin, you need search no further than Khao Hin Lek Fai (Flintstone Hill). It is situated about 3km west of the town centre. Follow Chomsin Road over the railway line and instead of bearing right with the road to Pala U, keep going straight ahead. It's a steep climb to the top, but worth it once you're there.

Everything Else

You will find this idyllic beach location some 3 km of Villa Casa Negra, not too far off the main highway to Pranburi. Simply follow the signs to Khao Tao and then Sai Noi beach. The road goes around a reservoir and is easy to find. Although small - probably no more than 1km long - the beach is generally quiet, except on weekends and public holidays. There are a number of beach restaurants that serve up delicious local food, seafood and drinks and they all have sun loungers and umbrellas. As opposed to Hua Hin and Khao Takiab beaches, Had Sai Noi drops-off quickly, making it ideal for swimming. You will have to keep a close watch on any children though.
