It's a Wetherspoons. Good Curry nights. Very good value real ales. Good value pub grub. Breakfasts too, with unlimited tea and coffee. Roomy, carpeted pub with high ceilings, chandeliers and framed pictures. Viscount (Lord) Palmerston served more than nine years as Prime Minister and died in office, in 1865, aged 80. He also had a series of forts built to protect Portsmouth Harbour and it's dockyard. However, the threat of invasion receded and the forts became known as ‘Palmerston’s Folly’.

A barley mow is a stack (mow) of barley, especially barley that was cultivated and then harvested. Barley is a grain that is commonly malted for brewing beer. The Barley Mow is a pub on Castle Road with a super little beer garden at the back. Go through the second door from the pavement to the lounge bar to access it - not the main door. https://www.barleymowsouthsea.com/index.html On tripadvisor in June 2019 Bigmatt1724 reviewed it very comprehensively by saying... Best pub in town. This pub is a rare example of what a local pub should be (and they’re getting rarer thanks to the big chains who want to serve chavvy 20 somethings as much cheap lager as they can get down their necks) First off - it’s a friendly place. We use it all the time as our local and it’s a rare day we don’t end up chatting with a complete stranger. There’s never trouble here, your average lager lout has far more interest in the big retail sheds in town so they take one look at the Barley and walk on by. This is the sort of place you could walk in on your own, sit at the bar and suddenly find yourself in conversation with a regular like you’re a regular yourself. There are 8 ales on hand pumps for the real ale fans, a handful of lagers, draught and bottled, a good selection of spirits and wines, and they’ll even make you a coffee if you want one! There are numerous events through the year; Judy the Landlady puts on themed evenings for things like Eurovision, Chinese New Year, Easter, you name it. There’s a yearly charity fundraiser (“BarleyAid”) a quiz every Monday, live music every Thursday, and sometimes on Fridays / Weekends. There are notices everywhere with upcoming gigs and events, and yet it’s still possible to walk in sometimes to a quiet, almost empty lounge bar, and sit in the corner with the paper and a pint. There a meat raffle every Sunday, sometimes there are free nibbles on the bar, as the mood strikes; anything from a bowl of olives to a bowl of Judy’s roast spuds. There a reasonable selection of crisps and snacks, but the pub doesn’t do food as its main business; this is a proper community boozer, not a gastro pub. There are two parts to the pub; the lounge bar is entered via the door down the entrance hall facing onto Castle Rd; there’s plenty of seating, it’s carpeted, a radio is often on in the background providing unobtrusive music. There no Sports TV, so that crowd don’t come in, although they do drop the projector screen for the Rugby : Eurovision!! If you choose to go on a Thursday to see a band, they kick off at 9.00pm, but if you want a seat, get there early as it can get crowded. There’s a nice little beer garden out the back which Judy keeps looking lovely all year round. Occasionally she sells young tomato plants over the bar; they also sell fresh eggs very cheaply too. Sometimes you’ll find random items for sale, usually for charity, when someone has had a clear out! There’s also a Bar Billiards table this bar, one of only a small handful in Portsmouth. The public bar is on the other side of the pub, accessed by a door on the junction with Castle Road and St Edwards Road. The public bar is often empty and people make the mistake of turning round and walking away, but if you stand at the bar, the staff will see you on their CCTV and get to you as soon as they can. It’s quite ok to to call out “Hello” to let them know you’re there, as they can be busy in the main bar, but serve you they will. There is a jukebox in here (just ask for it to be turned on if it’s not) a dart board and a pool table. There’s little gaggle of chesterfield sofas at the far end, access to the garden and toilets at the other. The pub has quirky but homely feel to it, it’s walls are lined with 1940’s wood panelling, and decorated with all sorts of odds and ends. Nose around a bit further and you’ll find little humorous notices and oddities. There’s even a small library of second hand books you can borrow for a small charitable donation, and return when you’ve done for the next person to read. This really is a little gem of a pub; I almost want to keep it a secret, but really; do give it a visit, because it’s the last of a dying breed. It’s a bit like the bar in “Cheers”; everybody knows your name. To all the staff, and Judy especially: thank you for keeping a great pub great!!!

Shenanigans Irish Bar & Cafe 57 Osborne Road, Southsea, PO5 3LS. https://www.shenanigansirishbar.co.uk/ Definition of shenanigan 1: a devious trick used especially for an underhand purpose 2a: tricky or questionable practices or conduct —usually used in plural b: high-spirited or mischievous activity —usually used in plural. As the only Irish bar in Portsmouth, Shenanigans brings a little bit of Ireland and a pretty good pint of Guinness to Southsea’s main popular restaurant area. The friendly atmosphere, great music and outstanding staff will make your visit a memorable one. At Shenanigans Irish Bar you are guaranteed a warm welcome in a safe, friendly atmosphere where you can not only have a great breakfast, you can chill out with a beer or two. For the none drinkers they serve fantastic coffee, Yorkshire tea or a variety of soft drinks. They serve the best pint of Guinness on the South Coast and have the awards to prove it. Other Guinness products we are proud to serve include Hop House 13 lager and their latest, Open gate pilsner. It’s not all about the Guinnes, so they also have Becks Vier (4%) Stella (5%) Stowford press cider, Franciscan Wells Irish Rebel red ale and Chieftans IPA completes the draughts. A wide range of bottled beers/wines and spirits are available, including their award winning whiskey collection for the connoisseur. Keep an eye out for their Whiskey of the month. We’re fed up with cocktail bars charging a fortune for bland cocktails made with bad ingredients. It’s even more frustrating if you aren’t sure what you want and end up with a drink you don’t even like. That’s why we’re calling time on boring, overpriced drinks. The Sunday Post is a new bespoke experience, unlike any other bar in Portsmouth. Bring a bottle of your chosen spirit, tell us your favourite flavours, and a trained mixologist will create a cocktail just for you. Each two hour booking includes table service, personal recommendations, and all of the mixers and garnishes needed to make your dream drinks. You can learn tips and techniques used to make each drink, or just sit back and enjoy. The Sunday Post is brought to you by the same team behind Catalan Barcelona Tapas Bar. We are passionate about Portsmouth and want to create restaurants and bars which become hubs for the Southsea community. We pride ourselves on creating fun, friendly atmospheres where everyone feels welcome. We use the finest local ingredients, highly trained mixologists and go out of our way to look after guests. A new cocktail bar business, Bobby’s Lounge, has opened in Southsea and takes its interior design inspiration from the Art Deco movement. Bobby’s Lounge – at 18 Marmion Road, Southsea – welcomed its first customers in Dec 2023 and is the result of owner and former architect Bobby Tera’s passion for the retro styles of the 1930s. The cocktail bar is located on the site of the former site of the Southsea Travel company and stands next to The Marmion pub. Alongside wife Monica Tera, Bobby said that it has been his ambition to open a cocktail bar for a long time and realising the goal has felt like “a dream come true.” The couple originally hail from India and Poland respectively. The design choices have come in part due the couple’s own interior design tastes, but former solutions architect Bobby also explained that he wanted the venue to fit in with the “classy” Marmion Road locale, adding that he plans to install pictures of the area as it was in the 1930s in the bar. Bobby said: “This road used to be the place to be. Our customers are really happy with the service we provide and very excited about the styling. We are doing classic cocktails, which is what everyone likes around here.” The venue is also open during the day, serving hot drinks like teas and coffees, and Bobby plans to expand this element of the business to eventually include cream teas and cakes.

Going on a proper British Pub Crawl

This is number 1 on your journey. I'm taking you in a loop. It's about a 10 minute walk. You'll pass a few on the way but the one's I am taking you to are the real old-fashioned type. Resting behind The Kings Theatre, The Phoenix features an L-shaped bar with a patio courtyard and a separate games room, with real ales on offer. A space in the pub is used as a stable for horses when The Kings Theatre uses the animals in their productions, most commonly at Christmas for their pantomimes.

Pub number 2. Another little walk to get to from The Phoenix but again worth it. I would say good real ale but all these have that. What may be worth mentioning is the cider being especially good. Small. A delight to be in.

Number 3. Just a few yards from The Hole in the Wall. Our favourite pub. They sell fresh farm eggs, sometimes you might be able to get a roll. Worth going on a Thursday evening for the music but you might not get a table. A real friendly locals bar. Courtyard beer garden at the back, but it's nice to stay inside. Go in the left hand door that takes you to the Lounge rather than the main one - that takes you to the public bar.

Pub 7. Not brilliant range of ales but you've had a few now anyway. Go for the guest ale in the barrels at the back of the bar on the right, and sit by the window if you can - it's very close to the harbour entrance with all the big ships going by. This is a pub to not be missed out on for location. There are benches outside too and they do fish & chips wrapped in newspaper which isn't bad if you haven't eaten already. You're going to head home now - walk along the seafront with it's newly completed sea wall and promenade, then head through the common after the funfair towards The Queens. Keep going along Clarence Parade to enter Auckland Road West from the seaward side and I'll give you the last pub because it's on your doorstep and friendly.

Final pub. Lovely frontage. Has music sometimes, and the local ukulele group practice here too which is fun to watch. I don't like the magnolia walls or the poorly executed mural but it's so nearby that it would be silly not to pop in.
