Possibly the best natural beach on Sanibel Island (not Pine Island, which has no beaches). Often excellent shelling as you walk north towards Captiva. During high season, arrive very early in the morning for a (metered) parking spot, or after 4 PM. Bring plenty of cold drinks and food. Other than basic restrooms, there are no other facilities on-site. Ideal beach for an all-day visit, but be prepared for a good walk from the parking areas. Note: the return trip to Pine Island from Sanibel is best made in the evening, well after sunset. Local traffic during high season/winter months is extremely congested both entering and leaving Sanibel. - - - 2022 HIGH-SEASON TIP: Allow ALL DAY to visit Sanibel Island, arriving early AM. Traffic conditions are sometimes bumper-to-bumper on Sanibel-Captiva, as visitors flock to the beaches there, by car. (Once on Sanibel, switch to rental bicycles to get around easily.)

Pine Island favorite! (aka 'Calusa Heritage Trail': parking lot and main entrance off Waterfront Drive, near Tarpon Lodge.) Historic Calusa site; indigenous people of Southwest Florida, now extinct... spelled 'Caloosa' by some. Found on the United States National Register of Historic Places. Situated on the scenic western shore of Pine Island, 1.5 miles west of the Pelican Suite - AirBnB, the RRC encompasses 67 acres at the heart of the Pineland archaeological site, a shell mound site extending across more than 100 acres from the mangrove coastline. Favorite spot for birdwatchers, quiet bicyclists, and people who enjoy nature. The Calusa were once the most powerful people in all of South Florida. For many centuries they accumulated huge shell mounds, engineered canals, and sustained tens of thousands of people from the fish and shellfish found in the rich estuaries west and south of Fort Myers. A beautiful, peaceful walking area. Watch for egrets and nesting osprey. Contemplative space: allow adequate time.
