Parks & Nature

Near Città di Castello - Well, not really a beach, but this incredibly popular spot by the river is indeed known as Città di Castello Beach. It's about 5 minutes drive from Città di Castello - and you pass it every time you head to town from the house. I was not sure what category to put it under as, as well as lying on the grass by the river or bathing in the lovely big natural pools, you can have a drink or sit inside or outside to eat delicious home-cooked flat-bread ('torta') with a range of fillings or other traditional dishes. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g580241-d3484766-Reviews-Il_Sasso-Citta_di_Castello_Province_of_Perugia_Umbria.html

Our local 1,500m Apeninne mountain. It's about 45 minutes drive from the house (depending on the route you take). It is often covered in wild flowers in the Spring and is a great, open, airy place to walk and breath deeply, boasting fabulous views in different directions. There is a Rifugio or two at the top where you can get a drink or a meal. http://acqualagna.com/en/natura/monte-nerone/

Don't miss a visit to the stunning and impressive Furlo Pass (Passo del Furlo), a gorge through the mountains just beyond the small town of Acqualagna. There is a picnic area nearby and it is possible to swim in the river. (Fyi there are also many other lovely places to swim in the river, including in the village of Acqualagna itself and, from there, in the direction of Cagli and of Piobbico). This is also a popular rock climbing destination. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-g2317977-d674189-Reviews-Furlo_Gorge-Province_of_Pesaro_and_Urbino_Marche.html

If you'd like a more sedate (and much more touristy) caving experience, then go to the Frasassi caves. Wide horizontal walkways have been dug into the caves to save visitors from having to climb down into them. Inside there are marked paths and hand-rails. Amazing caves, though, with some cathedral-sized spaces. http://www.frasassi.com/

Mount Cucco is well worth a visit. A visit to its caves is an amazing experience, but it's not for the faint-hearted. You have to walk steeply up for perhaps one hour (hard work in the heat!) and then climb down long ladders into caves of near-zero temperatures. The temperature change is a shock to the system, so be sure to take some warm clothes. The caves are wild and stunning. Booking is required. I believe the minimum age is 8 - but they let us bring two intrepid 6-year-olds who loved it! Visit their website for info and booking - http://www.grottamontecucco.umbria.it/info--prezzi

These are the biggest waterfalls in Europe and the biggest man-made waterfalls in Europe. You can view them from the impressive falls from above and below - and enjoy a good workout on the hike up and down the steps between the two (or you can take the minibus). They are beautiful, but be aware that this is a touristy spot and can be packed in mid-summer. Queues can be long for tickets, so you might want to buy them online. https://www.marmorefalls.it/?lang=eng

Città di Castello Sightseeing

Most of these sites are in Città di Castello. Somehow the town of Gubbio slipped in too. There are of course many other beautiful towns and cities worth visiting eg Sansepolcro, Perugia, Arezzo, Assisi, Urbino. And many more if you want to travel a little further.
The 11th-century Round Bell Tower is my favourite Città di Castello site, because it is just so unique and beautiful (especially when lit up in the evenings). It's not always open, but if you want to enjoy the great views from the top (an easy climb), go to ask to go up at the Museo del Duomo (see below). Among past uses, it has served as a prison. https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campanile_rotondo_(Citt%C3%A0_di_Castello)

Or Torre del Vescovo. This medieval tower is more important than the Campanile Cilindrico in the civic hierarchy of towers, but less special, in my view. Although it is increasingly becoming the Leaning Tower of Città di Castello. I think you can still climb to the top of this one too. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g580241-d10320734-r431880770-Torre_del_Vescovo-Citta_di_Castello_Province_of_Perugia_Umbria.html

Città di Castello tourist office. Pick up leaflets on tourist sites and events, including Estate in Città (Summer in the City), an initiative to promote music, theatre and other events in the old town during the summer. Their website is well set out, listing buildings and small museums that I have not included here, but unfortunately it is only in Italian. Click on 'Percorsi' and then on each of the tabs below for listings of places to visit. http://www.cittadicastelloturismo.it/
