Hvammstsngi is about one hour away from Budardalur. Boat tours run from May 15th through September 30th; check their web site for more information. Oh, and here’s the separate web site for the museum, which is open year-round. Boat tours leave at 10 AM, 1 PM, and 4 PM. Note that the museum closes at 4 PM in the summer, so you’ll have to see the museum before your 4:00 tour. Hvammstangi is also home to the Kidka Wool Factory Outlet, which usually offers small scraps of wool for free, along with larger very inexpensive wool scraps. (They offer a lot more wool products too, but the free and cheap stuff was unique!) This isn’t a must do in Iceland, but it’s an enjoyable, memorable, and educational trip. At least in nice weather.

Valley Haukadalur is rather wide and well vegetated. It contains a trout lake and the nice salmon river Haukadalsa. In the past, the valley floor was well wooded, but only a few trees remain nowadays. From the farm Hamar on the southern side of the valley, the sun cannot be seen during a 25-week period in winter. The most renowned historic site of the valley is the farm Eiriksstadir (Eric’s Farm), where Eric the Red lived until he was exiled from the country and sailed to Greenland, where he resettled. His son, who left with his parents, grew up there to the age of six. He, of course, was the discoverer of North America in the year 1000, Leif the Lucky.

Farm Saudafell and former church site is situated in the Middalir Valleys in the Dalir District at the foot of a synonymous mountain. Sagas of IcelandAccording to the Sturlunga Saga, the ancestor of the Sturlunga dynasty, lived there. Once the Vatnsfiord dynasty attacked his farm in January 1229, when he was away, plundered and disgraced the people. Three years later, the brothers of the Vatnsfiord dynasty were travelling in past Sturla’s farm. He became aware of that, went after them and killed them for revenge. In the 16th century bishop Jon Arason, his two sons and other followers were visiting Saudafell. His archenemy, Dadi Gudmundsson of farm Snoksdalur got the news of his presence there. He gathered an army of men, went to Saudafell and seized the father and sons prisoners. He took them to Skalholt, the bishopric of the southern see, where they were beheaded January 7th 1550 by Danish soldiers.

The most popular glacier for skiing and hiking in Iceland is Langjökull – the country’s second largest glacier and the glittering diamond in the Vesturland’s crown. Living up to its name which means ‘the Long Glacier’, Langjökull offers a 367 miles sq (950 km sq) stretch of ice cap, ideal for snowmobiling and admiring the winter wonderland scenery. However, that’s not all Langjökull has to offer: beneath the frosty surface lies a network of vast manmade ice caves where a world of shimmering blue and silver ice is waiting to be explored.

The Glanni waterfall in the river Norðurá is believed to be home to elves and gnomes. And believe you me, that is of g importance to the Icelanders who have great respect for those invisible beings coexisting with humans in perfect harmony. Glanni is by no means the most beautiful waterfall in Iceland, nor the largest. But, it is the source of the water flow for Norðurá, one of the greatest salmon fishing rivers in Iceland. The landscape around Glanni is quite diverse due to its location near to an ancient lava field. But, as Borgarfjörður is the most genial area in Iceland, whereas weather is concerned, you will also find fragrant woods and colourful fauna nearby. Hiking from the parking area at the Birföst village, the Glanni area is ideal for a picnic. It is a most tranquil experience. From a bluff by the river's edge, you will get excellent views of Glanni on your way to the waterfall. It is one of those perfect photo spots.

Grábrók is a volcanic crater east of Lake Hreðavatn in the fjord of Borgarfjörður in West Iceland. Easy “hiking” on stairs (15-20min) to reach the top of the crater and enjoy the view of the inside and the second and third craters. One you are on the top you can walk all around the crater. In 1h max you can visit this place. I did one of my most scenic drone footage. Since it’s on the ring 1 I really recommend to stop on the way to Reykjavík from Búðardalur.

Only town in Iceland with no church

Búðardalur The village has a long history, dating from the time of the first settlements in Iceland. The name means "Camp Valley", or more etymologically straightforward "Boothdale"; it is where settlers had temporary camps when coming to the area. In 1899, Búðardalur was officially granted the right of commerce. Budardalur is a small village at the head of Hvammsfiordur Bay. The village is the commercial centre for the county and boasts of one of the most advanced dairies in Iceland. The dairy serves several nearby counties and daily its trucks drive hundreds of kilometres to gather milk from the farms. It is renowned for its ardent efforts to create new milk products and has won many prizes in Iceland and in Europe for its specialised products, and its cheeses are very popular. A modern abattoir and meat processing plant is operated locally and its products are well know all over the country. Many interesting places of interest / historical sites can be explored near Budardalur, and a number of rivers and lakes offer excellent trout, char and salmon fishing. Iceland’s oldest indoor swimming pool is at, some 20 km north of Budardalur. Laugar was a school centre and now a newly built and renovated summer hotel in friendly environments is operated there.

Spa

Krauma Thermal Baths are in West Iceland, near the town of Reykholt. Note that there are 2 towns named Reykholt in Iceland: the other one is in the South of Iceland, in the Golden Circle area. Krauma opened at the end of 2016, the first in a trio of new premium thermal baths. GeoSea in North Iceland opened in 2018, and Vök Baths in East Iceland opened in 2019. Krauma costs 3950 ISK for adults, 2000 ISK for kids 13-16, and free for kids 12 and under. There is a full service restaurant inside, or the well-regarded food truck Staldrid operates right outside.
