Local Area

Although small, Llanfyllin is classed as a town as it has a town charter. It expanded somewhat when Lake Vyrnwy dam was being constructed and became home to many of the workers at that time. It now boasts the best Spar shop we think you will find anywhere. There is a cash machine & post office, at the Spar. 3 pubs, a very good restaurant; Seeds, a whole food shop that is open on Thursday, through to Saturday afternoon, 2 hairdressers, a butcher's shop, a cafe; Something Tasty, a Vegan Deli and a chip shop. There is also a mechanic's garage located behind our Annexe should you get car trouble. Llanfyllin is a small town flanked by the Cain and Abel rivers. Its reputation as a haven for alternative culture perhaps stems from its origins as an early Briton settlement, and the holy well of Saint Myllin still gives the town a sense of its identity today. Llanfyllin derives its name from Myllin, a Celtic Saint of the 7th century. In 1293, Llewelyn ap Gruffydd, Lord of Mechain granted the town its borough charter and is one of only two Welsh towns (the other is Welshpool) to receive its charter from a native Welsh ruler. A thriving market town, it is an ideal centre to use as a picturesque base to explore the area including nearby Lake Vyrnwy, Welshpool, Snowdonia National Park, or the market towns of the Mid Wales Marches.

This beautiful waterfall can be found at the far end of Lake Vyrnwy. It is smaller than Pistyll Rhaeadr but is great for a circular walk from the car park, and for a picnic. On a hot day it is lovely to bask on the pretty beach at the base of the falls.

From the photo, this looks a little more impressive than it is but is a nice place for a picnic on a sunny day and is close to the historic market town of Oswestry, if you need bigger shops during your stay with us, which is 16 miles from The Old Station Annexe.

This is by far our favourite place to eat locally, when we fancy something a little upmarket…At the moment it is only open at weekends, & for lunch on Sunday. Please be sure to book. https://plasyndinas.co.uk/
