about 1.5 hours from Sound Beach. There is a lot to do there from
exploring a lighthouse to walking around a decommissioned
military base (Camp David). It is a rare treat because you get to
simultaneously explore the “sound” beach as well as

Orient is at the very tip of the northern fork of Long Island. It is about an hour from Sound Beach. You’ll pass by several farms, wineries, and other local shops on your way. There are also several lighthouses and beaches to explore. Be sure to stop for lunch in a local small town restaurant!

Wildwood State Park is a go-to park for us due to its multiple trails of varying length and beach access. It is about 20 minutes away in the town of Wading River. The beach can be rocky in places, so be careful.

Millers Place Beach (which connects to Woodhull Land Beach
and Sound Beach) is accessible for free via Cordwood Landing County Park. You park in the parking lot and walk about 5-10 minutes down to the beach on a dirt trail. The trail is not flat.

Smithpoint County Park is technically part of the Fire Island
National Seashore, but is not the infamous Fire Island.
Nevertheless, this is the closest access point to the Atlantic Ocean (about 30 minute from Sound Beach) and is very beautiful. There is a lighthouse and miles of walking. It is a go-to spot for us. The parking is a bit odd, though. Just follow the signs.

Nevertheless, this is the closest access point to the Atlantic Ocean (about 30 minute from Sound Beach) and is very beautiful. There is a lighthouse and miles of walking. It is a go-to spot for us. The parking is a bit odd, though. Just follow the signs.

Connetquot River State Park Preserve is full of walking and
horseback riding trails. You can walk for a mile or eight! It is a fun nature-filled getaway in the middle of a busy part of Long Island.

Avalon Nature Preserve is a family-friendly park with lots of trails, but it is often very crowded. It is near Stonybook University, so consider checking out both attractions in the same trip!
