St Lawrence Market has been in operation since the very first days of Toronto in the early 1800s and remains a great place to shop for food to take home and cook, or to eat on the spot. Queen St West, or West Queen West as it's known locally, is Toronto's premier walking street, full of small shops and boutiques, coffee shops and restaurants. It's not a tourist street; it's where Torontonians go to shop and play and live. You could devote an entire visit to just walking Queen Street, from Parkdale in the west, through the shopping district right through downtown. Further east, the neighbourhood of Leslieville offers great restaurants and a friendly vibe. Queen St continues even further east, eventually ending up in the iconic Beach neighbourhood, where the city meets the lake and where each year the Beach Jazz Festival, well jazzes up the scene.

Cabbagetown is one of Toronto's original neighbourhoods. It fell into disrepair from the 1930s to the 1960s, when it experience a renaissance that is unparalleled in Canada. With charming houses and cottages lovingly restored, the neighbourhood is now one of the most upscale in the downtown core but retains its old school appeal. A must for fans of architecture and historical renewal.

Parks & Nature

Hire a bike at one of the dozens of stands in the city and take a bike ride west along the Lake Ontario shore. A half-hour along, just before you get to Humber Bay Shores Park, take a turn north and follow paved bike trails along the Humber River through marshy wilderness and emerge into a park system lined with waterfalls that used to power the many grist, woolen and other mills that lined the Humber River. If you're ambitious, you can end your journey at the Lambton Inn, a perfectly preserved 19th century hotel that used to host visitors to the community around the mills.

Toronto's poor waterfront has been abused over the years as a contaminated, railway-infested industrial site. But that's all changed now. Bike trails, walking trails, picnic areas, parks, beaches, swimming pools, pubs, shopping--it's all there now and tons of people are there during the good weather especially. Hire a bike and ride along the waterfront from the Beach district in the east to the spacious parklands in the west. Great views of the city skyline all along the way.
