City/town information

The closest town is Hella. You most likely drive thru it on your way to Tranquility. It is located 30 km to the south, usually some 20-25 minutes drive from the house. There is a small market there called "Kjarval", a bakery and a vine store just by the only roundabout in town. There are a few restaurants in town as well. I recommend browsing on Tripadvisor.com to get all the details, just search for "Hella, south region Iceland". Hella also has a swimmingpool https://www.ry.is/is/ibuar/samgongur/sundlaugar

Town Selfoss is midway between Reykjavik and Tranquility. It is the last big town before Hella so if you need supplies and food in bulk, I would recommend either Krónan store or Bónus store. But if you need any unusual or special items, then the capital area might be a better place to shop before heading out of the city. In Selfoss you will also find a number of restaurants.

Hvolsvölllur is the next town to the east by road nr. 1. If you arrive from the east and need some groceries, we recommend Krónan store. https://kronan.is/verslanir/174 Hvolsvöllur also has a public swimmingpool https://sundlauginhvolsvelli.weebly.com/

Sightseeing

Volcano Hekla is not visible from the house as mountain Bjólfell blocks the view but a short walk or a drive along the main road in either direction will reveal the Queen of our Icelandic volcanos. It is a sight to see. It last erupted for a few days in 2000. It is far enough away so you should not be in any danger in case it erupts but local authorities will give out advise if needed.

Waterfall Seljalandsfoss is a 45 min drive (60 km) from the house. It is really beautiful and worth visiting. Also do not miss the more hidden Gljúfrabúi waterfall located a short walking distance to the left of Seljalandsfoss, inside a small canyon.

Reynisfjara or Black beach is a sight to see. It is 120 km from the house but a great stop i f you are driving along the south coast. Just be VERY CAREFUL and observe all the warning signs as the WAVES CAN BE DANGEROUS if you go too far. So WATCH YOUR SELF AND YOUR KIDS carefully! Too many have LOST THEIR LIFES there!!!

The Caves of Hella are only a 25 minutes drive away. This is a guided tour where you get a chance to visit 3 caves, some of which are more than 1,000 years old. Visit https://www.cavesofhella.is/ to book a tour. It is well worth it.

A great scene to visit. It took us about 2,5 hours to walk up to the Eye but it was so worth it.

The road from the main highway near Hella towards the house.

The road from Hella towards the house is mostly paved but a part of it (7 kilometers) is gravel road that is regularly maintained by the authorities. Then there is a paved road again for a few kilometers and then for the last 3 km you have a gravel road again. During wintertime when there is snow, you might need a 4x4 car to get there as snow is not cleared every day.
