Piper Lagoon a super close-by local must see. Plan to spend an hour or two exploring. There are some trails that will take you around the small peninsula. Or take a towel and relax on the beach and watch the ferries as they go in and out of the bay.
If the tide is out you can walk across to the fisherman cabins on the island. If you dare to do this- be careful to watch the tide schedule or you'll be swimming back to shore!!

This location is a locals favorite, but it is a bit of a drive, but its totally worth it. It located up island- turning off the hwy on the first entrance into Parksville. Don't drive into Parksville! Take a left once you've exited the hwy- go under the bridge (left), go straight through the 4 way stop (after you stop!) then take your first right turn onto a road that seems not well used. keep following this road till the end and this local gem awaits you.
Take towels, snacks, drinks etc. You'll be out in nature with no shops around.

There is a 5.51km trail around the lake, popular with walkers and runners. The trail is well groomed and apart from a steep knoll towards the west end of the lake trail is considered an easy walking trail. There are shorter loops available towards the south end of the trail.
The main beach area near the paved parking lot is Nanaimo's only lifeguard patrolled fresh water swimming spot (June-August). There is a washroom and change room building on site.
