Percival’s Island is perfect for getting exercise or just enjoying a nice slow walk along the James River. The paved walking path is great for walking, running, and biking.

A short 45 minute drive through beautiful Virginia countryside will get you to Smith Mountain Lake State Park. It’s just a $5 entrance fee and the park has many things to offer. There’s a public beach where you can swim with lifeguards and a snack shop, as well as picnic areas. There are other parts of the park that are much more secluded to get away. There are lots of great hiking trails, and multiple bathrooms through the park. This a personal favorite of ours for a lake day picnic!

1235 Rd 888A short 45 minute drive through beautiful Virginia countryside will get you to Smith Mountain Lake State Park. It’s just a $5 entrance fee and the park has many things to offer. There’s a public beach where you can swim with lifeguards and a snack shop, as well as picnic areas. There are other parts of the park that are much more secluded to get away. There are lots of great hiking trails, and multiple bathrooms through the park. This a personal favorite of ours for a lake day picnic!
Sharp Top is a local favorite as it’s a decently short hike ranging from 35-50 minutes depending on pace to hike from the parking area to the top. The peak has a gorgeous 360° view which is perfect for sunset or sunrise hikes. The trail itself is relatively easy for most experienced hikers who are able to hike up elevation. There are quite a few natural and man-made steps you climb on the way to the summit. It is 1.5 miles one way, so 3 miles round trip. There is also a shuttle service that runs for part of the year for those who are not able or do not wish to hike. The shuttle does not quite go all the way to the summit.

Third Wave is one of my personal favorite coffee shops around. Everyone who works there knows what they’re talking about when it comes to coffee. The name says it all, they offer a variety of coffee roasted in house, must of which is lighter roast to taste the true notes of the coffee. They serve all the classic espresso drinks, drip coffee, pour overs, cold brew as well as a great seasonal drink menu with really interesting mixed coffees.

It offers a very open space with lots of natural light and plenty of seating. They have a seasonal menu of mixed coffee drinks that are always unique and interesting options. My personal favorite from the summer menu is the Ruby Tonic!
This is hands down the best all around BBQ place around. From the BBQ itself to the sides, this place will not disappoint. There is plenty of outdoor seating, but there is little to no seating inside. This place started as a food truck and has grown tremendously over the last couple of years.

There is plenty of outdoor seating, but there is little to no seating inside. This place started as a food truck and has grown tremendously over the last couple of years.
If you’re looking for tacos, burritos, or quesadillas this place is about as close as it gets to traditional Mexican you’ll find anywhere around Lynchburg. It’s an old box truck with a deck built out on the front with a few small tables to sit outside. This is a special little spot, and one worth checking out! My personal go to is the chicken quesadilla with a pineapple Jarritos!

It’s an old box truck with a deck built out on the front with a few small tables to sit outside. This is a special little spot, and one worth checking out! We absolutely love the margarita pizza here. The Bee Sting is another favorite. Definitely worth the drive if you are craving some handcrafted brick oven pizza!

If you want a delicious smoothie,  açaí bowl, or healthy lunch this is the place for you. It is a beautiful little smoothie bar with lots of natural lighting and wooden accents. We love their jackfruit sliders and tacos, the avocado toast, kombucha flights, PB&J açaí bowl, and Heavenly Cacao smoothie. It is also attached to the Health Nut which is a local health food store.
