Any of the hikes off Hwy 518 are beautiful and rewarding! There are too many to list, so I suggest downloading All Trails app or a similar hiking app and look through what works for you. The hikes range from moderate to hard and most will have a steady incline. You are sure to find one that suits your need and desire. Be cautious of the time of year you are embarking on your exploration. Most trails start at over 8,000 ft elevation and are in densely wooded areas. They will hold onto snow much longer than the mesa and Taos. A few suggestions: Indian Lake Trail 19C- The trail to the lake begins at the Agua Piedra campground, located southeast of Taos. The trailhead is at the corral where a sign indicates it is the start of the Agua Piedra Trail. Follow the path for about one-half mile, along a rising meadow to the Indian Trail (19C) sign. Turn left here and pass through a gate. Total hike length is 4.5 miles with an elevation gain of about 1,100 feet. Serpent Lake Trail 19 - Serpent Lake is a beautiful, blue, high alpine lake surrounded by wildflowers and woods. It is located beneath treeless Jicarita Peak. Although not an easy hike, it is worth the moderate 3.5 mile climb to reach it. The Serpent Lake Trailhead is located at 10,600 feet and is reached by following State Road 518 south of Taos to Forest Road 161. Serpent Lake Trail (Carson National Forest No. 19) is part of a system called the Jicarita Peak Trail and is one of only three near Taos to be designated as a National Recreation Trail ( The other two trails are Columbine-Twining near Taos Ski Valley and the South Boundary Trail in Taos Canyon.) Comales Canyon Trail 22 - located just over 30 minutes from the center of town, is one of the truly lovely hikes in this part of the forest. It follows a creek lined with rock walls and climbs into aspen groves and fern-covered meadows. Go as far as you want and turn round or follow the trail to others in the interlocking system from anywhere to 8-12 miles. Flechado Canyon Trail -Gallegos Peak via Flechado Canyon is a 5.9 mile out and back trail located near Vadito, New Mexico. Flechado Canyon Trail follows a stream through meadows and aspen groves. It climbs to Gallegos Peak with its views of Jicarita and Truchas Peaks. The hike is located just past Sipapu Ski Resort on State Road 518. Look for the Flechado Day Use area to the right and park here. The trailhead is located across the road.

Rio Grande Gorge ” High Bridge” and West Rim Trail Wildlife Viewing l Hiking | Mountain Biking l Local Arts & Crafts The Río Grande Gorge Bridge, known locally as the “High Bridge,” is a massive steel arch crossing the Río Grande Gorge northwest of Taos. Spanning 1,280 feet and secured nearly 565 feet above the river, the bridge is the seventh highest in the United States. The High Bridge offers stunning views at every turn. From the sidewalks that line the bridge, the view straight down into the Gorge is breathtaking. To the east, tower the peaks of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range. On the west side of the bridge is a rest area where you will find parking, picnic tables, restrooms and the trailhead for the nine-mile West Rim Trail. This moderate hike heads south to Orilla Verde and is perfect for those seeking an easy walk or bike ride. Going south, way from the bridge, you have an amazing view as the high peaks spread before you and the nearly 600 foot Gorge plummets down to your left. Returning north you see the bridge arching over the Gorge and framing the river below. The West Rim Trail can also be accessed on the south end off New Mexico State Road 567 at the north end of Orilla Verde. Distance from Taos Plaza: 12 miles Directions: Follow US Highway 64/ New Mexico State Road 522 north for approximately 3.5 miles to the last traffic signal as you head north toward the village of Questa.
