City/town information

Venice is less than 200 kilometres away from Koper, which makes it a perfect destination for a one day trip. Of course, the visit of Venice from the sea is an especially exceptional experience – from around the end of April to the beginning of October trips from the Slovenian Istria are possible with a catamaran (departures from Piran).

In Trieste, you can enjoy the historic cafés and savour the view of grand buildings and the 200 metre pier, which bravely defy the bora winds and which you can admire from the main square that is the largest city square in Europe opening towards the water. With its many shops, Trieste is still a very popular spot for shopping. After sightseeing in the city centre, we recommend you to visit the Miramare Castle, its museum and gorgeous park. You can also visit the especially beautiful Muggia, a small town near Trieste, which has a 14th century castle built on a hill by the old port, and an old town, which is located even higher and includes an archaeological park and the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta.

The cosmopolitan Portorož invites you with its promenade and the broad selection of hotels, thermal parks, restaurants and casinos. Especially interesting is the Kempinski Palace Hotel, which opened its doors in 1910. We also recommend a visit to the former Monfort salt warehouse, which today serves as a showroom and gallery. Those interested in culture will marvel at the sight of the Forma viva outdoor collection of stone statues. During a walk from Piran to Portorož, you can also admire the Grand Hotel Bernardin, where we recommend you to stop by the Monastery and Church of St. Bernardin, which was built in the 15th century.

Piran is a picturesque city with a distinctive silhouette that is protected as cultural heritage in its entirety. Due to its well-preserved wall, religious buildings, palaces, the distinct cape and magnificent square it is a globally recognisable destination in the Mediterranean. In Piran, you can find various galleries and museums, where visitors can learn (almost) everything there is to know about the city and its history and of course about its world-famous citizen, the violinist and composer Giuseppe Tartini, after which the inhabitants of Piran named their main city square. An exceptionally beautiful view of Piran is possible from the sea, which lets you experience the city in a completely different way. Distance from Koper: 18 km

The small village between Izola and Piran offers quite a lot. The only extensive protected area in Slovenia that also includes the sea, the smallest and most northern salt pans in the Mediterranean, the only Slovenian sea lagoon, the longest and best-preserved pine-lined road in Slovenia and more. Particularly attractive is the Moon Bay, the mandatory “postcard” of our coastal region. We also recommend a tour (whether on your own or with a guide) of the Strunjan Landscape Park, where you will learn about the history, culture and specific features of this natural environment. Izola, a former fishing town with rich cultural heritage, invites you to feel the atmosphere of the small coastal town. During your walk through the narrow streets of the city centre we recommend a tour of the old palaces, parks and the “street of artists”. Especially interesting are the Church of St Maurus and the 30 metre high bell tower, which are located at the highest point of the former island. In the Simonov zaliv Archaeological Park, a cultural monument of national importance, you can see the remains of a Roman coastal villa and its port. From there, the path leads to the Belvedere Hotel, which is among other things one of the most breathtaking lookout points in the Slovenian Istria. Even today, Izola proudly presents its fishing heritage to the visitors: through interesting outdoor sights (old boat workshop, Biser fishing boat, restored boat in the old dock) as well as through the museum called Izolana – House of the Sea, which depicts the city’s history and the history of fishing and the fish processing industry Izola was famous for. Ankaran is located right besides the border with Italy and attracts visitors mainly due to its natural sights. You can visit the Debeli rtič Landscape Park, the seashell dune and the Mediterranean salty meadow of St Nicholas – the only one of its kind in Slovenia. For those who are more interested in architectural sights, we recommend a visit to the Monastery of St Nicholas, the World War II monuments, a special rainwater pump and a number of other archaeological sites from the Roman period. The only 19th century fully preserved old farm on the Slovenian coast and the former communal bread oven are also worth a visit. Distance from Koper: 7 km

The salt storage was built in the 17th century along the defensive wall and the old pier of Koper. After the initial conflict with the Republic of Venice (first time in 1145), where Koper was defeated and forced to pledge the so-called “loyalty oath” to the Venetian doge, Koper did not participate in subsequent conflicts (it remained loyal to the Venetians) and thus received the right to a salt monopoly port in 1182 for 29 years as an expression of gratitude, which gave it the exclusive right to import salt to the mainland in the area between Grado and Pula. With this, Koper established its economic supremacy over Istrian towns. Nowadays, Taverna is a popular venue for events.

On the square by the Muda Gate (Prešeren Square), you can see the largest city fountain, which was first mentioned in 1423. It is a fountain in the square, which served as the main connection point between the island city of Koper and the mainland. It is the last station of the aqueduct, which supplied the city with water. Its current Baroque appearance stems from 1666, when podestá Lorenzo Da Ponte had it rebuilt. The octagonal fountain pool with an arch, which symbolises a bridge (a symbolic link to the name of the podestá) is further decorated with pyramids, coats-of-arms, stone faces, other motives and a fence. The fountain was used until 1898.

The concentrated medieval village below the rock edge is absolutely gorgeous with its castle and homesteads erected in Karst style. The Strmec (Socerb) Castle is the only larger fort building at the Karst edge above the Slovenian coast, and charms every single visitor. The area of the Socerb Castle is registered as a monument of national importance. From the castle, we can also admire the beautiful view of the Gulf of Trieste and the Gulf of Koper – which was the (strategic) reason for building it. There is a Karst cave below the castle, which is connected to the courtyard of the castle. The area around the castle is also registered as cultural landscape. In the vicinity of the castle, you can also visit the Holy Cave – a Karst cave with the only underground church in Slovenia. The legend says that the martyr of Trieste named St Servulus was hiding in it.

The majority of the beach near the Koper city centre is covered by grass, but you can also find some trees that will let you cool off during the hot summer days or you can rent parasols and deckchairs during the swimming season. Children will enjoy the tidy sandbox and playground and the beach is also equipped with toilets and changing cabins. The beach is covered in pebbles, while the entrance to the sea is suitable for children, since the water along the beach is shallow. You can also jump into the water from the pier. You can find a confectionery and a restaurant on the beach, which is guarded by lifeguards during the visitor’s hours of the swimming season (from 15 June to 30 September). The beach proudly displays a Blue Flag, which marks its clean water and the cleanliness of the beach. Entrance to the beach is free, which is why it is visited by locals and tourists, who long for a swim in the sea during the summer months.
