The Capelinhos is a monogenetic volcano located on the western coast of Faial Island in the Azores. It is part of the larger volcanic complex of Capelo, which includes 20 scoria cones and lava fields that are aligned west-northwest to east-southeast from the Cabeço Gordo caldera. Although the name "Capelinhos" is associated with the volcano, it technically refers to the western cape of the parish of Capelo. It can be considered the westernmost point of Europe; there are more westerly islands in the Azores archipelago but they lie on the North American Plate.

“Morro do Castelo Branco” is a trachytic dome, mantled by pumice deposits from the Caldeira stratovolcano. The dome is heavily affected by sea erosion (e.g. high, steep and plunging sea cliffs) and its uppermost part shows whitish weathered horizons of clay deposits, thus the name “branco” (white).

Museum

Housed in the former Jesuits’ College, one of Faial’s most important buildings, Horta Museum exhibits a heterogeneous collection of significant pieces from the island’s cultural heritage, covering a broad period of history. Amongst the highlights are the ethnographical sections and the collection of paintings from the 16th to the 20th century, with works by António Dacosta, Manuel Lapa, Mário Cesariny and Sousa Pinto, amongst others.
