This historic 17th century city is only 6kms away from the house, reachable by bicycle or by car. It was one of the harbour towns of the VOC (Dutch East Indies Company) and in mid-17th century was one of the most powerful and important cities in the Netherlands. It is still home to one of the largest marinas in the country. You can take boat trips to and from the port to Medemblik or hire a sailboat or "sloep" to sail the city or in the inner sea.
It is called the Haringstad (Herring Town). The fishing water is now fresh water and the fish changed from fishes like herring and anchovy to eel, smelt and red perch.
Tourism is a large part of the local economy apart from being the home for big seed production companies like Syngenta and Monsanto.
There is a local station station which offers direct rail service to Hoorn and Amsterdam Central. Also there are summer ferries for pedestrians and cyclists to go to Stavoren, Medemblik and Urk.

Located in the historic centre of Enkhuizen, dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage or preserving the cultural maritime history from the old Zuiderzee region.
There are 2 parts to the museum, the indoor and the outdoor.
The indoor museum consists of a string of 17th century buildings (some original and some replicated) which were used by the VOC and contain some permanent and temporary exhibitions. The notable "Schepenhal" (ship hall) allows visitors a close up view of some of the more common historical types of boats from the Zuiderzee's rich fishing industry as well as recreational sailing ships. The indoor museum also displays the cultural easy, including paintings, furniture and costumes.
The outdoor museum is a new extension to mimic the architecture and atmosphere of the villages around the former Zuiderzee.
There are restaurants at the museum too.
they are open everyday (except public holidays) from 10am to 5pm.
